A For Effort!

Well, maybe not an ‘A.’  Because Jay Mohr was terrible.  But you know what?  I have now watched the NHL Awards twice through (I’ll explain) and once again I’m reminded of how much I love this sport and this league.

Last night I missed half of the acceptance speeches because we were LOLing too hard (after Ryan’s, we proceeded to thank Noureen for all the other guys when they gave their speeches) and we were complaining too much during Jay Mohr’s stuff to completely appreciate it.  We did, however, enjoy the Bobby Ryan/Ryan Getzlaf skit.  Genius.  It was funny, it was entertaining, even my mother cracked up.  I love things like that.  These guys have such great personalities and the league really should showcase that.

Today I watched my recording of it, which was fantastic.  I could fast-forward through all the awkward banter and bad musical performances and just watch the acceptance speeches and player bits.  It was quite nice.

I’m always down for a good “Alex Ovechkin looks like a caveman” joke, but Bigfoot?  Really?  I also thoroughly enjoyed his acceptance speech.  I’ll be honest, I was surprised he won the Ted Lindsay award.  I knew there was always the chance he’d win but I didn’t actually think he would.  And while him winning that made me think he really did have a shot at the Hart, I’m okay with the way things turned out.  Alex was voted most valuable player by his peers (I pointed this out ad nauseam to my Sidney Crosby fan friend last night around two in the morning until she threw a pillow at me), Hank got recognition from the media for what really was a great season, and Sid got the “we feel bad that we don’t have any other award to give you so we’re giving you this award” award.  HA.

But I must admit, Sid did look completely out of his element last night.  Poor kid.

I have a theory that it was actually Daniel accepting the awards tonight, and I’d like to keep it that way in my mind.

I love Tyler even more for his speech but the poor thing needs a little work on the hair.  God bless his soul, I can’t wait until he wins ten Norris trophies.

Ryan Miller can work skinny ties like it’s nobody’s business.  I’m very picky about who wears skinny ties, but he gets my seal of approval.

Mike Green, this is what you get for being a fatty and a crappy defenseman.  Yay Duncs!

I cried when Theo was accepting his award.  I have no problem admitting that.  What a guy.  I hope he ends up somewhere good next year.

(Seriously, Darcy, I’ve been saying for at least a year that you need to get him here to back up Ryan.  He’d be a great backup!!)

I think I’m going to hunt down Pavel Datsyuk and get him ordained so he can marry me or give a speech at my wedding or something.  That guy is hilarious.

Patrick Kane is going to get herpes before he’s done in Vegas if he’s not careful.  Good grief, Kaner.

Ooooooooooooooovertime!

Both the Sabres and Caps went to overtime. The Sabres lost. (Let’s not talk about it, Tyler.) The Caps won because Lars Nicklas Backstrom is so good at hockey and I don’t even know what words to use to describe him anymore.

For yesterday: the baby pictures made my life, I’m really sorry but I love Pavel Datsyuk, and Jochen Hecht played an amazing game. Too bad he couldn’t look like that more often.

Today: I love Nicki, I love Nicki, Flash and Fehric are really good together, and I love Nicki.

I’m not even going to say anything about Alex’s hit on Campbell. It looked like Soupy toe-picked. In one angle it looked like Alex got his back and from another angle it looked like he got his arm. I really don’t know. There’s no consistency in the NHL so it could go either way. The one thing I don’t like is Alex being compared to Matt Cooke. They are so completely different.

This game was really huge, because if it turns out it is a Stanley Cup Finals preview, I think Washington won the mental war today.

I’m not going to be able to see either game on Tuesday since I have a concert, but I already know what’ll happen for Buffalo: Atlanta will win. MacArthur and Max are probably going to have career nights too. At least the Sabres are predictable.

Called It.

I knew it would happen but I was forced to go to the game anyway. The Sabres were not very good. The second period was fun, but that was it. I felt like I was watching a bad team, not a (for the time being) division-leading team. Gross.

Tyler, however, continued to be FABULOUS. PLEASE BE OKAY.

Thomas Vanek sucks.

The guy sitting behind the Bruins bench acting like a chicken every time Chara skated by was actually hilarious.

Thank goodness we’re almost at the Olympic break.

11 STRAIGHT!!!

February 2, 2010 at 9:45 pm | Posted in Buffalo Sabres, Happy!!, Jose Theodore, New Jersey Devils, Ottawa Senators, Players, Tyler Myers, Washington Capitals, Winning Is Totally Awesome | 2 Comments

(I’m still not talking about the Sabres game ever again for as long as I live.  Especially since they play Ottawa tomorrow night.)

The Caps just won their eleventh straight game!!  They made HISTORY!!  They beat the Bruins!!  Weeeee!!!!  (I’ve been amused by the suckiness of the Bruins this year.  They…are not very good at hockey.)

The Caps fell behind early, but they rallied for the win in front of their fathers and brothers.  Mike Knuble (<3) got a goal, as did Brooksie, as did Gordo (!!) as did Alex, with his obligatory empty netter.  The real story tonight, however, is Jose Theodore.  I don’t even really know what to say.  Last night Ryan Miller made me suicidal with his horrendous play, but tonight Theo was stellar.  I just…wow.  Some of those saves were breathtaking.  I guess this is the goalie who won the Hart Trophy.  If he could keep playing like that, I don’t even know what the Caps could do.

They could very realistically finish the season with a thirty point lead in their division.  This is so many different kinds of hilarious.

The Sabres, on the other hand, very realistically could lose their division if they keep giving up important games like the one I’m forgetting even existed.  Ottawa has been on a tear lately and they’re only a few points behind Buffalo.  Tomorrow night is huge.  When If Buffalo loses, to Ottawa, they’ll loose serious ground.  And even if they do manage to keep Ottawa back, it’s getting harder and harder to catch New Jersey, even if they did get shut out by the Leafs tonight.  (Did I just write that the Devils got shut out by the Leafs?  Um, what?)  And they can’t expect to just ride Miller after the Olympics.  It’s a messy situation.  They need to get back to the – gulp – system they were using back when they had so much success.

Tyler was named Rookie of the Month for January!!  Congratulations, Tyler!!  You’re the bestest.

Background Noise.

Sooo last night the Sabres battled from being down two goals twice and after some poor play they managed to make it into the shootout.  It was intense, full of suspense, lasted eleven rounds…and Buffalo lost.  Oh well, I guess they had to lose some time.  It was just good that they got at least one point before hitting the road.  Don’t forget your toothbrushes, boys.

Tyler Myers is still amazing and wonderful.  I love him.  He had Anderson beat and he just sort of lost the puck.  But I forgive you, Tyler.

I wasn’t really sure what Lala was doing half the time in net last night but he still got the team a point so I’ll let it slide.

Mayhaps Thomas Vanek is (finally) busting out of his slump?  This would be marvelous news, because he’s been bugging me.

I might finally get to go ice skating Thursday night.  I haven’t been yet this winter and it makes me sad.

The Capitals, on the other hand, beat the Thrashers 8-1 for Bruce’s 55th birthday.  Yay, Caps!  The game was actually kind of boring which is odd since they scored eight goals, but whatevs.  I’m glad it happened.  Mikey Knuble got two and Sasha got two, which was fun.  I still don’t like you Sasha.  You also happen to eat like a slob (more on that in a second).  The most impressive part about last night’s game was probably that Alex only had one assist.  But I’m a little mad at him for not scoring.  Not cool, man.

It’ll be interesting to see which team Ilya jumps ship for.  I do not understand at all why Chicago is in the conversation, because they’ve already got a bazillion long-term contracts and I don’t see how they can afford another $10 million next year.  And he’s not worth it as a rental.

The Caps’ post-game locker room video once again does not disappoint with the background actions.  We’ve got what kind of sounds like Brooks during Schultz’s interview, naked Brian Pother and naked Eric Fehr, which is GOOD, while Neuvy is being interview, and we also have naked Alex (eww) and naked Sasha shoving food down his throat at an alarmingly fast pace.  Dude, slow down.  No one is taking it from you.

The Sabres don’t play again for a long time, so enjoy your break, Sabres!  Just don’t get too rusty.

Ahahahahahahahahahahahaha.

They sure don’t call ’em the Laffs for nothing!!

This game was highly entertaining.  TYLER scored two goals, the Sabres collectively were very good on the power play, and their penalty kill was spectacular they didn’t kick around the short bus kids too terribly much.  Seriously, though, at one point I just sat there and laughed while the Sabres were on the penalty kill.  God bless those Leafs.  They sure do try.

I don’t think the Sabres are ever going to lose again, and I certainly don’t think they’ll ever lose to the Leafs.

That Phil Kessel has been, uh, pretty darn good lately!

Brian Burke said “lovely” on the radio yesterday.  I was not aware that that word is in his vocabulary.

Dude, Kevin just reminded me that the Leafs traded away Tuukka Rask.  AHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH IT JUST GETS FUNNIER!

If Tyler Myers does not win the Calder Trophy, I will be even angrier than I will be if Alex does not win the Maurice Richard Trophy.  And trust me, guys, that is so angry no one will want to be in a ten-mile radius of me.

Last night the Caps stuck it to the Senators, wahoo!  Nicki got two (WHERE is his EXTENSION?) and Alex finally got one.  Yay, happy, joy, smiles.  Semyon Varlamov will never play hockey ever again, however.  Poor Varlaay.

Apparently my mom almost got into a fight with a drunk Leafs fan at the game.  That would have made my life, because my mother is not exactly the type of person who gets into fights at hockey games.

Tyler, you’re just the cutest.  But I’m pretty sure you were never “peewee.”

I like how everyone was legitimately concerned that the Leafs would tie it up at the end.  Guys, two things:

1.)  I realize the Leafs were “putting on the pressure” and the Sabres couldn’t even get the puck, but they’re the Leafs.  They are the LEAFS.

2.)  We had Ryan Miller in net, playing against the Leafs.  Ryan does not choke against the Leafs.

Ryan Miller just said “take the punch like a man.”  There is a reason I love this man.  Although there are a few signs that he actually might be a psychopath after all…

All in all, the Sabres have won six straight and they’ve been all sorts of games.  Come from behind, 1-0, lots of goals, “cutting it close at the end.”  I love every single one of them so very much.  I think they might actually possibly be good at hockey.  It’s a really cool feeling.

So. Much. Fun.

December 30, 2009 at 9:57 am | Posted in Buffalo Sabres, Drew Stafford, Happy!!, Jason Pominville, Patrick Lalime, Pittsburgh Penguins, Players, Ryan Miller, Steve Montador, Tyler Myers, Winning Is Totally Awesome | 5 Comments

It probably won’t come as a surprise to you that I don’t like the Penguins.  At all.  I hate them.  Part of it is that I don’t like how they were forced down our throats, part of it is that I’m still bitter from the Winter Classic, and part of it is that, hello! I’m also a Capitals fan.  No Pens love here.

That being said, I was none too pleased when it was 3-0 last night.  The Caps had dug themselves in a similar hole last night, my jersey was about to go 0-2, the players all looked like crap, and even worse, Ryan Miller looked like crap.  I’ve reconciled myself with the fact that our team isn’t all that special, but we have an insanely good goalie.  When even our insanely good goalie is playing badly, I get a little angry.

Then Drew Stafford got a penalty shot.

I know pretty much everyone else has already said it, but that was huge for both him and the team to go out and score on the penalty shot.  And it was even bigger for him to score another goal.  And then, after I spent the past few games yelling at Jason, it was big for him to go and score another goal.  And, of course, Goosie.  It was so ridiculously awesome to watch that game and the comeback.  These are the games that are so much fun while you’re watching them, and then weeks or months later it’s fun to bring them up.  Yes, I do remember when the Sabres came back and kick the Penguins’ collective asses in regulation!  Yes, that was an awesome game!

This might have been the highlight of the game.  Tyler, you simply are the best.

Steve Montador is kind of wonderful, guys.  I’m just throwing that out there.  Maybe Darcy totally knew what he was doing.

Patrick Lalime’s numbers since his “little trip” to Portland (Jason, you’re too cute) have been kind of stellar.  It was really cool not having to freak out about the backup letting in sixteen goals after the starter let in three soft ones.  Patrick Lalime has been very, very good.  I love it.

I sort of feel like this whole “getting pulled and then throwing a temper tantrum” is something we’ll have to tread lightly around with Ryan.  After the way he looked on the bench, I certainly would be too scared to ask him about it.  Be careful on NHL Live today, guys.  This is, after all, the guy who mentioned stabbing Scott Gomez.

This was definitely the best game of the season.  It was also my favorite game of the season.  And these two points are so important since they will be losing to the Thrashers Friday night.

On the Capitals side of things, Jason Chimera wants me to like him.  Sorry, Jason.  I like that someone is swearing his head off in the background (Michael?) and I love how stupid Alex is (did you know he collects players’ sticks?  He’s such a wackadoodle), but I simply cannot love you.  Score the Stanley Cup clinching goal and we’ll talk.  But for now, we are enemies.

And don’t you dare hug Karl Alzner like that.

Happy Boxing Day!!

I hope you all enjoyed your day yesterday, whether you celebrate Christmas or Festivus or any other holidays that fell over the past few days.  I know I did.

Santa didn’t bring me as many hockey-related gifts as he did last year, but I did get a Sabres calendar, a fleece blanket in Sabres colors (to go with the fleece blanket in Caps colors I had already gotten), and, of course, my new jersey.

It’s so pretty.  It’s a third jersey, because the slugs are ugly and I don’t want to wear them and supposedly they’ll be gone after this season.  It’s blank.  I’m toying with getting it customized with Tyler’s name and number, because I kind of adore him (and it only made me love him more when he ran into Alex Wednesday night and bounced off), but I might just leave it blank because it’s kind of cool like that too.  Now, I just have to get to a few Sabres games that the Caps aren’t playing in so I can actually wear the thing to HSBC Arena.

Team Russia’s roster was announced late Thursday night.  It was rather exciting.  The original list I saw freaked me out a bit because Alex’s name was the second last, but fear not, it was there.  It also made me laugh because for Varly it said “Semen Varlamov.”  Semen and Jizz, together for the Olympics.  Even if he doesn’t see any ice time, which I doubt he will, it’s still really exciting that Varly made the team and will be able to get invaluable experience for Sochi.  I don’t know too much about the KHL players on the team, but I do know that the offense is really, really scary.  Holy cow.  Watch out, everyone.  These guys are loaded.

Will Lala be starting tonight?  I’m sure the Sabres will lose either way, so they might as well give Ryan the night off.  Especially after he gave up five goals Wednesday.  It seems like we’ve been seeing an awful lot of the Senators lately even though this is only the third game against them this season.  The Senators have been getting a lot of press-time lately, between partaking in poisoning opponents and arson and getting engaged to Carrie Underwood.  (Has everyone seen the rock?  It’s huge.  She’d sink straight to the bottom.) Alfie and Spezza are out and Heatley is gone so the Sabres won’t have to deal with that, but I still have no faith in them against this team.

After the way the Caps manhandled the Sabres and put five past Miller, I’m looking forward to seeing how they handle Marty Brodeur tonight.  If they get swept by the Devils I might cry.

Now, off to go eat all the leftover Christmas cookies.

One More Day!!

I only have one more day of school to get through before I’m free.  Yes, vacation will be considerably less awesome now that I have TWO major tests the first two days back, but I’m going to try to enjoy the first few days of it without thinking about the hideous amounts of work I have to do.

(An aside:  For reals, who assigns a major test the first two days back and who reschedules one a week and a half later after a week straight of no school?  Ridiculous.  I don’t like it.)

I was unable to watch the Sabres game last night, as I was hiding the body cramming for the test we were lead to believe was today.  From what I’ve read, it sounds like the Sabres played a fairly crappy game, Ryan Miller was outrageous, Derek Roy won it all for them in overtime.  The crap and Ryan Miller parts sound about right.

Um, did Tyler get hurt last night?!?! Not cool, Tyler.  I don’t like when you’re hurt.  Fix that discomfort and heal up.

It’s nice to hear Sir Christopher was skating again.  I miss him ever so much and hope he returns soon.  Poor dear, he hasn’t been able to help any old ladies cross the street in ages!

Just in case you had all forgotten, THE SABRES PLAY THE CAPITALS AGAIN TOMORROW!!  WEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!  So exciting.  Not much to report on the Caps front other than they took four of six points on their road trip, Varly won’t be playing tomorrow night, and Alex has gotten even FATTER.  Dude, for the love of all that is holy, lay off the nachos.  Fat does not sit well on you.  I know you want to work Lars’s babyfat look, but trust me, the abs were bad.

And that’s all I have to say for now.

Things That Are Good And Things That Are Bad.

December 10, 2009 at 10:48 am | Posted in Alex Ovechkin, Alexander Semin, Buffalo Sabres, Chris Clark, David Steckel, Frostee Loves Way Too Many Guys, Happy!!, Henrik Tallinder, I Was At The Game!, Lars Nicklas Backstrom, Losing Sucks, Nathan Gerbe, Other Teams' Back-up Goalies Kind of Suck, Players, Rob Ray, Ryan Miller, Steve Montador, Tyler Myers, Washington Capitals, Winning Is Totally Awesome | 2 Comments

Things that are good:

  • SNOW DAY!!!!!  YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!

Thing that are bad:

  • Still having to study for the reading quiz I’ll have if school isn’t canceled tomorrow.

Things that are good:

  • Ryan Miller.  Holy HELL, is that man good at hockey.  It was totally awesome when Sabretooth was bowing down to him.  He’s so good.  My jaw dropped multiple times.  Ryan, I want to thank you for redeeming yourself this year and making it less embarrassing for me to love you (because I don’t really broadcast it anymore, but I do still love him).  You’re so good at being a goaltender.  Just don’t burn out on me, ‘kay?

Things that are bad:

  • Getting shut out by the Sabres.  Um, Caps, you saw tape from their last two games, right?  Yikes, you need to learn how to score on elite goaltenders.

Things that are good:

  • Chris Clark totally looking at me three times.  Love ya, Christopher.

Things that are bad:

  • Fehric trying to flip me a puck and failing miserably.  Things Eric Fehr is not good at:  Shootouts, flipping pucks to dedicated fans during the pre-game skate.

Things that are good:

  • The Sabres killing off that power play the Caps had early on.  Wowzers, Sabres.  I know you have a great penalty kill, but the Caps have a great power play.  Y0u done good, boys, you done good.

Things that are bad:

  • Jose Theodore.  Varly, please get well soon.  (I realize he made some great saves, but all three goals he let in were really, really bad.)

Things that are good:

  • Alex coming over right in front of me and rattling the boards during the pre-game skate.  There were only a couple other fans by me at that time and they all had Sabres stuff on.  Alex, I love you.  I know I said this last December, but you’re HUGE in person.  And your hair is gross.  Yeah, I went there.

Things that are bad:

  • Alex playing arguably the worst game of his career.  First there was missing the WIDE OPEN NET by four feet.  Then there was the dive.  (My mom said Rob Ray didn’t think it was much of a dive and she didn’t either, but it happened right in front of me, and, well, it was pretty embellished.  Oh, Alex.)  Then he whined at the refs, and then he broke his stick.  That was just embarrassing.  I put up with so much crap from him, and then he broke his stick, and then I screamed “I STILL LOVE YOU ALEX” while he was getting a new one because I’m just trying to be a good fan.

Things that are good:

  • The Gerbe Derby got his first NHL goal!!  Yay!  Nate-dogg, I do love you so.  Congratulations, little man.  You earned it.  I’m glad you survived your collision with Tyler Myers, and I have to admit that it was pretty darn adorable.  Also, darling, picking on David Steckel is not the wisest idea since he’s twice as big as you.

Things that are bad:

  • Monty stealing Nathan’s first goal so he only got one instead of two.  Steve, that was not so nice.

Things that are good:

  • Henrik Tallinder’s goal.  Like, when the eff did he learn how to do that?

Things that are bad:

  • The Caps allowing Henrik Tallinder to score a goal like that.

Things that are good:

  • The first period.  That was an exciting period of hockey, folks.

Things that are bad:

  • The third period.  That was a really sloppy period.

Things that are good:

  • Lars’s hair.

Things that are bad:

  • I, uh, nope.  Got nothing.  Just look at that HAIR!

Things that are good:

  • The Sabres coming out after two crappy games and playing a really solid, great effort.  Way to bounce back, boys.  Y’all make me proud.

Things that are bad:

  • The Caps win streak ending.

Things that are good:

  • I got to see the secret handshake!!!!  Guys, it is even cuter in real life.  I laughed for about fifteen minutes.

Things that are bad:

  • I don’t get to see these two teams play each other in person again until March 😦
