(I don’t have anything to say about Tim Kennedy getting bought out because the whole thing is just too weird and I don’t get it at all.)
Shortly before free agency began, I had a sneaking suspicion that the Sabres would go after Shaone Morrisonn. I knew that he was most likely done with Washington and I knew that the chances of the Sabres keeping Lydman and Tallinder were slim. I was never a huge Mo fan but I never disliked him. He wasn’t phenomenal but he wasn’t complete crap; he was just there. Which made me think he would be perfect for Buffalo.
In retrospect I should have written this idea of mine down, because today darling Mo (Mo I after Mo II came to town) signed a two year deal with the Sabres. Reading Twitter immediately following this deal was somewhat amusing because half of my feed was “Goodbye, Mo” and the other half was “How the eff do we spell his name?” Mo was one of those players who I really didn’t mind. I didn’t fawn over him or drool over his play, but I tolerated him. I don’t think he’ll be a standout but I think if the Sabres needed to add another body to the blueline, they could have done worse. He’s not super flashy although that might have just been because he was stuck with Mike Green. I feel like if Fat Mike is your defensive partner, you really can’t risk trying to move the puck into the offensive zone yourself. I really haven’t given any thought to any potential Sabres lines or defensive pairings this year (other than to think about the Sabres defense and shudder) so it will be interesting to see where Lindy ends up putting him. This is all going from memory, but he could handle a fair amount of minutes. One time I particularly warmed to him was against the Rangers in the playoffs last year. I can’t for the life of me remember why, I just remember that he really endeared himself for me.
As for off the ice, two things come to mind as really important. He and Brooks Laich were roommates on the road and whenever the subject of road trips or roommates or hotels came up, the two would wax poetic about their system. I’m sure I’ve written about it on here too. They had this ridiculous system set up that they followed completely on road trips. It always kind of reinforced for me that Brooksie is completely OCD.
The other thing is that Mo must have been pretty desperate if he agreed to play in Buffalo, because let me tell you something: Buffalo is not his favorite place. While my memory was slightly foggy in regards to this video and it’s actually Schultzie who names a Buffalo restaurant and not Mo, I’m 99.9% positive Mo also lists Buffalo since all the guys say Buffalo.
Regardless, I’m just glad that for once I was right. Welcome to Buffalo, Mo! I’m afraid the arena here isn’t always quite as loud as the Verizon Center, but hey, at least I’ll be there a few times!
This game wasn’t too exciting, but I think a 1-0 win over those yucky Canadiens is just what the doctor ordered. A shutout will go a long way in helping to fix Ryan’s GAA and save percentage, and it was nice to see the Sabres score first for once.
Dear Timmy K,
No worries about those penalties, man. My mom still has a crush on you.
If you guys didn’t see Vanek ROB the Hab formerly known as the Caveman, look it up. Seriously. You won’t be disappointed.
I don’t want to talk about the Caps because they are now a legit pile of crap and they will never win again. And it’s all Bruce’s fault. (Is it really true that he never connected with Chris? Because if that’s the case I will never forgive him ever again.)
Things that are good:
- Ryan Miller got a shutout! And not just a Ryan Miller Shutout, but a real one. Oh, Ryan. Your shutouts make me so happy. I may be freaked out about this spring when you’re so tired you can’t even get your skates on, but I have to admit that I’m completely in love with your badass play right now.
- Timmy K scoring! And Jochen scoring! And Henrik scoring! Look at all that scoring love right there!
- Beating the Leafs. Hahahahaha.
- Lars getting a three point night. Larsiepoo, I love you.
- Jose playing a solid game after having a lot of time off. Jose, I sincerely hope that you’ve been able to work through your personal issues. And I’m glad you’re playing well.
- The Thrashers winning. I love them.
Things that are bad:
- OH MY GOD ALEXANDER MOTHER EFFIN’ OVECHKIN WHY DO YOU INSIST ON HURTING ME LIKE THIS??? KNEE-ON-KNEE? REALLY? THAT WAS A DIRTY PLAY. THERE, I SAID IT. IT WAS DIRTY AND I’M MAD AT YOU AND IF YOUR ACL IS TORN I’LL NEVER TALK TO YOU EVER AGAIN I WILL BE VERY SAD. YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO BE IN BUFFALO IN A WEEK AND A HALF, MISTER. I LET IT SLIDE ONCE LAST YEAR BECAUSE YOUR GRANDFATHER WAS SICK AND I LET IT SLIDE IN THE PRESEASON BECAUSE IT WAS THE PRESEASON, BUT ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. I WILL NOT TOLERATE THIS EVASIVE BEHAVIOR ANYMORE.
- Now that I’ve worn out my caps lock, let’s continue in a rational manner. Oh my good golly gosh, that was awful. I’ve never seen him in so much pain before ever. This is so bad. The Capitals are in deep shit without him. Team Russia needs him. I want to see him play live. Lars needs him. I can’t believe he would do something so dirty. Stupid, stupid Alexander.
I’m going to go hang out with Little Ryan, because he isn’t pissing me off right now. Looks like it’ll be time to get the bobblehead bandaids back out again.
First I was happy when the Sabres scored the first goal. Then I was concerned when the Flyers scored two quick ones (Dear Sabres, Work on actually playing for twenty full minutes, not nineteen and a half. With Love, Frostee). Then I was cautiously optimistic when they came back, and then I was happy again when they won 4-2. When you start and end happy, consider it a good game.
Score aside, that was one big chippy chipfest. Wow. So much fighting and hitting and players writhing on the ice in pain and me having mini panic attacks. All in all, I think the Sabres alone ended up with 13 3 casualties? Patty getting kicked out, Goosie hurting one leg and Craigory hurting two? Then there was Tyler Myers, but thank the merciful and great hockey gods, he came back.
Both Paul and Craig’s injuries looked serious. The Sabres will miss having their captain around, but Paul Gaustad has been one of the best players for the team aside from Ryan Miller. They’re going to miss him a lot.
Mayhaps we can call up Tyler Ennis? If he’s not too busy with other things?
Tim Connolly had a spectacular night afternoon. Good on ya for finally doing something, Timothy.
Mike Richards is the slimiest of all the slimeballs in the land, and I don’t like him. He’s so dirty, and he’ll always get away with it because he’s Mike Richards (cue Pierre McGuire). I wouldn’t be at all surprised if Patty got suspended for his hit, but no one’s going to do anything about Richards.
Ray Emery is not a very good goalie. I don’t know why everyone kept thinking he’s the reason the team could actually make a deep run this season.
Killing off all the power players against the best power play in the league was pretty spiffy, boys. Good work.
Stupid Scott Hartnell felt the need to pick on Timmy K, aka someone half his size. Keep it classy, Scott.
I don’t like Philadelphia. This win was very satisfying.
It was also an important win to get, because I’m already nervous about tomorrow night and to go into a game against Carolina with a five game losing streak is a recipe for disaster.
Sabres, please don’t completely embarrass yourselves at home against the Hurricanes. That would be tragic.
As usual, I started the game with conflicting feelings. Then Alex scored, and, um, well, you can figure out who I started rooting for after that.
I was really impressed with the Caps tonight. They managed to hold on to a lead in a game that was 1-0 for the majority of it, and they even managed to kill off lots of penalties late. Holy sweet mother of mercy, Mike Green even played DEFENSE. Like, how does that even HAPPEN? It must have been some sort of Thanksgiving miracle. I’m fully confident he will return to suckiness Saturday night. But it was kind of nice seeing him clear the puck out and do various defensive things. Totally weird to watch, but nice.
Varly, you’s a crazy mofo. ILY even if you do think American girls are really fat.
Lars played a very, very good game tonight. Lars has not been as good as he is known to be as of late, so to see him play so well was quite rewarding. He didn’t get any points, but he looked great out there. Just for that, my dear boy, you can have extra pie tomorrow night. Yes, yes, I know how generous that is. But Thanksgiving is a time for not worrying about our muffin tops.
Christopher Sr. continued to be far too shy to actually score a goal with me watching. Bless his heart.
At one point both of my Christophers were on the ice. It was so nice to have all my beloveds in one place.
The Caps played a great game and deserved the win. Pats on the backs for you, Capitals.
The Sabres, on the other hand, make me think that they will never ever play a decent hockey game ever again. How long has it been since they won? Three weeks? Four weeks? Good grief, they looked awful tonight. THEY DO NOT SHOOT THE PUCK. How many times do I have to tell them? SHOOT THE GOSH DARN PUCK, YOU ANTI-PUCK SHOOTERS!
Ryan Miller is keeping this team alive right now. He had absolutely NO support on the Fehr goal. Guys, one of these days he’s going to get hurt again or burn out or have a nervous breakdown, and then what are you going to do? How will you even make it on to the ice if he’s not there to bail you out every two seconds?
The power play sucks so bad I’m not even going to say anything else about it.
Except this: OMG Craigory when you have a five minute power play taking a penalty is so not cool.
(On the flip side, it was totally B.A. how the Caps killed off almost a five minute power play.)
Timmy K’s dad is a cutie-pie.
Ok, so, I guess it’s time to get to that hit. Here’s the dealio, guys: Alex hit Patty K. Yes, he did. Patrick’s head definitely got hit, but he kinda sorta saw him coming. And I don’t think it was a vicious head-hunting hit. The ejection was probably more deserved than not, but I’d be kind of surprised to see a suspension. And not just because of who he is.
Alex also always scores pretty goals against Buffalo. Buffalo seems to bring out both the best and the worst in him.
Andrew Peters tried to kill someone tonight, apparently. Petey, Petey, Petey. New Jersey has changed you. I miss the cute, cuddly body guard you used to be.
Vanek must still be hurt. He’s got to be. It’s the only explanation for why he’s been so bad lately. Oh, Thomas. Just get your booboos fixed so you can return to being an awesome goal scorer.
The anthem singer tonight looked like a mini Mike Grier. It was rather adorable.
Henrik Tallinder was on the ice for Alex’s goal. I totally called that.
Finally, before I wish you a very happy Thanksgiving and thank you all for reading, I’d like to pass judgment on Alex’s new haircut. Well done, Mr. Ovechkin. Usually your haircuts are pretty tragic, but this one looks great. It’s not too short, but you’ve taken care of that sloppy mess on your head. I love it.
But please, sweetheart, next time refrain from picking your nose while the camera’s on you.
Happy birthday, darling Lars!! Oh, the time passes so quickly. You’re growing up to be a big boy. *sniffles*
In honor of you, I wore an American Eagle sweater today. I know how much you love them:
(An aside: If I walked into an American Eagle and he was just standing there, perusing the racks on the guys side of the store, I would most likely either drop dead where I was standing or shriek.)
Thanks to TSN, we can now see what Alex got Lars for his birthday. “Right now my eyes are sore a little, but it’s okay.”
I love them. Best part is when they show Alex and you can see Flash sticking his face in to see if the mission was successful.
In other news…
Not much is happening with the Sabres, for a change. Lindy’s shuffling lines, Mike Grier might be back soon, Patches played at forward in practice. Awe. Some.
I’m inordinately excited for the game Wednesday night. I love when my two teams play each other. However, a word of caution for the Sabres: Last year the day before Thanksgiving Alex got a hatter. Just sayin’. Watch out, boys.
I had some really funny story I was going to tell and then I COMPLETELY forgot about it. Rats. It must not have been that funny.
Is Drew going to be back Wednesday night? Can we call up Tyler Ennis if he’s not? I always liked that boy.
During the Sabres game Wednesday night, my mom and I spent a good twenty minutes discussing Timmy K’s hair. We decided we like it.
The Sabres lost 5-2 to the Flyers. This is pukey and disgusting and gross and yucky and I don’t ever want to talk about it ever again. End of story, goodbye.
Well, no. I’m just tired and by extension, I’m not in the best of moods. I wanted the Sabres to compete tonight and play hard and at least make it a close one. Yes, Tyler scored to make it 4-2, but I didn’t see that goal and they still ended up losing. Not cool, Buffalo. Not. Cool.
After the second period I kind of gave up on them and flipped over to the Capitals game. Whatever. At least they won.
Ryan Miller has been really good so far this season, but if he’s in net tomorrow night I will flip shit. Lindy, STOP PLAYING HIM. OMG HE’S GOING TO BREAK.
Jose has been really good too. This makes me happy, but this confuses me. Jose, you’re supposed to suck and make me want to hurt people. What is this?
I’m glad Derek finally started scoring. Thank you, D. I appreciate it.
Tim Kennedy is just good at life. He and Mike Grier are so awesome together.
I wonder how many posts I’m going to write this year that involve the sentence “Timmy K and Mike Grier rock my socks when they play together on a line.”
I’m a bit perplexed by the Flyers. First, they’re so good and they’re amazing and they could ever win the Stanley Cup! Then they’re a one-line team. They certainly have a few injuries, but I don’t like using that as an excuse. It seems like such a copout. Half the players are going to be injured by the time you get to the Cup finals; you need to suck it up and be able to get past injuries during the regular season.
I like Mo the Second.
The Capitals are all breaking one by one. If something happens to Lars I don’t know what I’ll do with myself.
This post is very rambly. I apologize. I’m watching last night’s “Project Runway” and I’m really worried that Christopher is going to make it to Fashion Week.
Both of my teams went to overtime last night, but only one of them came out alive. In the grand scheme of things, I think it’s worse to lose to the Maple Leafs in overtime than it is to lose to the Islanders. But I’m still mad at you, Caps. You don’t play defense, Tom Poti still sucks, and you greatly angered me last night.
Okay, now that I got that out of my system, on to the Sabres!
They managed to win in overtime. This is a good thing, as Little Ryan probably would have lost his head if they haven’t. Dudes, how many times do we have to go over this? YOU CAN’T GIVE UP GOALS TO REALLY BAD TEAMS IN THE LAST MINUTE OF THE PERIOD. IT IS GENERALLY FROWNED UPON AND IT WON’T GET YOU ANYWHERE IN LIFE.
Drew got a goal for this birthday, so happy birthday again, little buddy! He also informed us, via Twitter, that swine has wreaked havoc on their team Halloween party. That’s a major bummer. Do you think I could get some quotes for my article?
Timmy also continued to be a badass and scored two goals, including the OT winner. I especially liked the one in overtime. You’re a good player, Timothy. You’re a really, really good player when you’re not hurt.
Timmy K continued to further embed himself in my heart by being awesome and gritty and too cute for words. He’s a good one, that Timmy. I like having him around.
Ryan Miller saved the Sabres’ collective backsides last night. He’s be great to this point in the season and I don’t want him getting tired out. That would be bad.
I’m fairly confident the Sabres will lose tonight for several reasons:
1.) It’s the second night of a back-to-back.
2.) Lala will hopefully be starting.
3.) It’s the Islanders, and therefore we can’t count on the Sabres to win.
4.) The Islanders will be riding on the “emotional high” of beating a team that was on a six-game winning streak in overtime. Argh.
Happy Halloween, kids. Enjoy the game if you stay in and watch it, enjoy the candy if you go get some. Make sure you check every piece before you eat it!
I know that this was exactly how Buffalo started out last year and I know it’ll all start going downhill soon enough (probably around the time Ryan gets completely exhausted at the Olympics), but for now, I’m completely enjoying the Sabres’ success. They’re winning, and they’re beating good teams. This is fun.
Marty Brodeur has not looked good this season. At all. I’m ecstatic that Timmy got his first NHL goal (AAAHHH!!! TIMMY!!! I LOOOOOOOOVE YOU!!), but Marty did not look good at all.
Ryan Miller will soon hurt himself/get too cranky to play well/get exhausted by the Olympics as I mentioned above, but for now, I’m thoroughly enjoying his awesomeness. Ryan, you’re not so bad when you’re playing well.
We ended up getting the Devils feed for the game which was annoying in that I couldn’t hear Rick and Harry, but was cool in that I could hear what other announcers (namely, Doc) think about the Sabres. I agree, boys. Chris Butler was a wonderful find.
I can’t believe Clarke MacArthur already has five goals. This is redonk. He’s got to stop scoring at some point. It’s not like he could get thirty.
I’m pretty sure Pommer got his third of the season in February last year.
Mike Grier and Timmy K playing together continues to amaze me. I love the two of them. They’re so good together. Their chemistry is spectacular.
Lots of NHLers have been struck with swine (or at least are coming clean about when they had it) today. I hope none of the Sabres catch it. And I hope Quintin Laing doesn’t get any of my beloveds in Washington sick.
Tonight was Tyler Myers’s ninth game, but there wasn’t seriously any drama surrounding it, was there? There’s no way they can send him back to juniors. No. Way. I will jump off a bridge or something drastic and (only slightly) unnecessary like that.
Tomorrow night the Caps play the Ilya-less Thrashers. It will be in HD, which makes me happy. I’m sad Ilya got hurt, and in a contract year, no less, but his absence makes the Caps’ job a bit easier. I would love for them to continue this sick-nasty winning streak they’ve got going.
Speaking of contract years, I’ve been feeling rather warm and fuzzy towards one Jose Theodore as of late. It’s not secret around here that he and I never really got along very well (scroll down to the earlier ones), so this fondness is a new territory for me. I don’t think he’s the same goalie that won a Hart trophy a few years back, but he’s been the better goalie for the Capitals to this point in the season. I just hope that IF the Caps re-sign him, he doesn’t start sucking again. I really hate when players only play well in contract years.
If/when Buffalo loses to Toronto, I will cry. I’m just letting you all know.
Fact: I love Tyler Myers. I would drop out of high school to marry him if he asked me. He’s amazing. He’s wonderful. He and Paul Gaustad can team up to rid the world of global warming and cure cancer.
Fact: I’m really pissed I missed the Capitals game.
Fact: Alex doesn’t score goals when I don’t watch.
Fact: That was the WORST shootout I have ever seen in my life. And I’ve seen a lot of shootouts and they’re always bad.
Fact: Timmy K and Mike Grier have the best chemistry. Its awesomeness is second only their goal celebration hugs.
Fact: Toronto will not win a hockey game this season.
Fact: Mike Richards’s hit was vicious. Good grief, Mike.
Fact: I hope Ilya’s ok.
Fact: Marty St. Louis confuses me.
Fact: I really wanted Drew to face Ryan in the shootout.
Fact: I am so insanely tired and I couldn’t even muster enough energy to care about this game until Drew tied it. I want to go to sleep so badly but sleeping in the job is the number one no-no when babysitting.
Fact: I don’t think the Sabres were all that mind-blowingly good tonight, but being able to come from behind at the very end and win is huge, even against a team like Tampa Bay.
Fact: Don Cherry’s suit was crazy tonight.
