It Has Slipped My Mind.

I had some (semi) important point to make on here but then I watched some golf and “10 Things I Hate About You” and I forgot. My apologies. But now that it’s almost Awards time, we can whip out all of our “Hangover” jokes!! Yay!!

The Poker Tournament Sees The Light of Day!!

June 16, 2010 at 7:18 pm | Posted in Alex Ovechkin, Huh?, Randomness | Leave a comment

(I know. Two posts in one day!! But I don’t have any more exams until Tuesday, so what the hey.)

So remember last year how everyone was talking about that charity poker tournamet various NHL personalities (including locally beloved Alex Ovechkin) were taking part in while in Vegas for the NHL Awards and how it would be on TV and then it NEVER WAS?

WELL, I flipped over to NHL Network to see what was on and lo and behold, it was the NHL Charity Shootout Poker!!! I know!!

I don’t usually play Texas Hold ‘Em when I play poker so I really have no idea what’s going on. But Alex is being ridic and there’s actual commentary, so I just might make it through a few more minutes before I give up and flip over to E!.

This is the craziest thing ever. Did you know there are professional poker players out there?!

IMPORTANT UPDATE: JR is about to shank Eddie O. This is what I call entertaining television.

Regents Exams: A Love Story.

June 16, 2010 at 10:26 am | Posted in Randomness | Leave a comment

I’ve been somewhat negligent when it comes to this blog lately, and for that I apologize.  School always gets crazy at the end of the year and I’m right in the midst of final exams.  (I’m actually supposed to be studying for my afternoon one today right now, but since I haven’t really started yet, I don’t see why I should now!)

I’m a high school student in the great state of New York, and as a consequence when it comes tie for final exams, I get treated to these wonderful little tests called “Regents Exams.”  Seriously, they’re the best.  New York has been doing these for approximately 652 years, and they’re just wonderful.  Basically, it’s a standardized state test that all the students in the state have to take when we finish certain courses (algebra, geometry, algebra 2/trig, all the sciences, certain history and English ones, and languages).  We’re required to take them and, in fact, we need certain amounts of Regents credits in various areas to graduate.  I’ve been taking Regents exams since eighth grade (they let kids take algebra I instead of eighth grade math) and I’ve really come to enjoy it.  Regents exams can be tricky (it might be because I went shopping instead of studying, but the Earth Science Regents is probably top five as far as hardest tests I’ve taken) but for the most part, they’re a piece of cake.  This is because even if you take the AP version or the honors version of a course and do more challenging things all year, you’re still required to take the Regents.  In May I took the test for the college level European history class I took (AP Euro) and last year I took my school’s honors version (I’m something of a history geek), and yet yesterday afternoon I sat the same exam every single other kid in the state took.  After the ridiculous history tests I’ve taken over the past two years, it was not hard.  At all.  It was cute.  My grandma keeps trying to tell me that Regents were really challenging back in the 1930s, but I’m not sure if I can believe her.

So right now instead of studying for my biology final Living Environment Regents Examination, I’m telling you about it.  Because since everyone needs to pass the exam, they put massive curves on them.  Why bother study when you know your exam will get a 15 point curve?

New York gets a lot of crap and a lot of it is deserved.  But if Regents exams mean I don’t have to study (because after you’re done studying for your APs you’re just done studying for the year) for my finals, that’s just fine by me.

Yay for Regents!

Hey, I Still Write This Blog.

Sorry for the lack of posts recently (again). Today was the last day of classes so I’ve been spending the past week sitting around watching TV. Now, however, I need to study for finals, but then I’ll be done!!

The Stanley Cup might be awarded tonight. I hope it isn’t. I’d love a Game 7 just for fun. I think Philadelphia can win tonight because they’ve been owning at home but I don’t know how they could win a game in Chicago. And that’s pretty much the extent of my commentary on the series at this point.

Chelsea Dagger is 100% stuck in my head. It’s pretty annoying.

Grand Plans.

Tonight my friend and I are going to watch the game together.  We’ll talk about how when the two of us are in the same room there is an astounding amount of combined hate for the Flyers and Blackhawks, and then we’ll reminisce about what went wrong for the Sabres and Capitals.  We’ll probably promise undying love for Brooks Laich at some point and we’ll end the night even more bitter than we were when we started.

So enjoy Game 4, everyone!

Just Go With It.

It’s been over 24 hours since the game started, but I still don’t really know what to say about it.  That game was a really surreal experience.  I have to admit that for the mythical “casual fan” it was probably highly enjoyable, and it was.  But it was the Stanley Cup Finals.  6-5 final score?  That’s cahrazy.  I don’t know what else to say about it yet.

All I’m going to say about Ryan Miller is that once again I got that, “OMG I love him I’m so glad he’s Buffalo’s” feeling.  That’s one of my faves.

But I’m not talking about either of those today.  Today, I am bringing to the internet a piece of complete nonsense an opinion I have held for a long time and finally have time to put on here.

I am of the belief that the Swedish hockey player Lars Nicklas Backstrom and the tennis stud Rafael Nadal share a striking resemblance.

Stick with me on this!  I know it’s crazy.  When I first made this discovery at some point last year (I can’t remember which tennis tournament it was during) I was surprised when the thought popped into my head, but I truly believe it’s based on fact.

Observe:

Rafael Nadal, tennis star, Euro hottie, all-around hunk.

Compare to:

Nicklas Backstrom, Swedish, insanely talented player.

Look at them!!  Long hair!  Round faces (although Rafael’s has gotten a little more chiseled)!  Similar mouths!  They both even have the exact same smile.  I couldn’t find two pictures to compare, so you’ll just have to trust me on this one.

Lars Nicklas is like the ying to Rafa’s yang.  There is a resemblance there.

I apologize for the utter ridiculousness of this post.  I just had to get it out there.

It’s The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year.

Right now, it’s that magical time of the school year when it’s not close enough to finals to start studying but the teachers have, for the most part, given up on teaching. As a consequence I have had very little to do as far as constructive activities, giving me much more time to ponder things of lesser significance.

Like how the Flyers are revolting, the Sharks are proving that at the end of the day they don’t want to let me down, the Canadiens (I can’t believe I’m saying this) are kind of cute once you get past the fact that they’re the Canadians and that Scott Gomez plays for them, and how this whole hissy fit between the IIHF and Hockey Canada is hilarious when you think about it. Did Crosby experience a disappointing end to his season? Yes. Should he still have considered going to Germany since, you know, he scored the gold medal clinching goal back at the Olympics and it’s positive exposure? Yes. Is everyone involved being immature and suffering from feeling of overinflated self-importance? Absolutely. But it’s funny.

Just as funny as watching Philadelphia lose. Which goalie are they on now?

They Actually Did It.

As much as I passionately, violently hate the Flyers (my dad grew up an Islanders fan) and as much as I adore Bobby Orr and feel robbed for never being able to see him play, I cannot stop laughing over the choke job the Bruins did. Not only were they up 3-0 in the series, but they were up 3-0 IN THE GAME. That takes skill to accomplish. The Bruins should almost be proud of what they managed to do.

I’m so sorry, Bobby.

The Sabres need to win tonight if for no other reason than to save Ryan Miller’s moustache. That thing is epic on so many different levels and to put him in a situation where he would shave it now in its infancy would be a crime.

The DC Adventure, Day 3.

I’m in the car on the way home. I’m tired but I’ll make it back for most of the games and The Ten Commandments tonight, so no complaints. The Sabres have a chance to clinch the division tonight and I’m hoping they’ll get over the temper tantrum they appear to have thrown to rebel against me going to Washington and make things nice and official.

Don’t tell the Sabres, but I’m already thinking I might come back over my February break next year for a game. That was what I had originally wanted to do this year but the Olympic Break got in the way of those plans.

I had previously been excited about the Caps game tonight but dear Chris Clark is hurt so now it’s just another game. Woo. I’m just glad I got to see Lars Nicklas’s thirtieth goal. That was exciting.

I haven’t heard anything to the contrary but I’m assuming Miller is starting tonight. Once they finally do clinch I hope Lala will at least get one more game…let’s not take any chances, Lindy.

My cute story is coming, I just don’t feel like typing it out on my phone.

P.S. There were way too many Penguins shirts in Washington. I’m used to/can deal with all the Sabres support, but Penguins? That’s sick.
