I Have Some Shame.

Over the past few years I’ve come up with a rule for myself. After my favorite teams are eliminated, I don’t wear their apparel until the playoffs are over. I just don’t want to be that guy in the Sabres shirt in the middle of the conference finals, you know? This usually is highly inconvenient, because my weekend attire when I’m hanging around the house is quite frequently a hockey shirt. This year was particularly rough because all of my hockey shirts except one got knocked out in the first round. Now that Stanley has been awarded and I’ve spent the day out and about and sitting finals in a Toews shirt, I can go back to lounging around in my Backstrom shirt. (And thank the hockey gods for that, because it’s the most comfortable tshirt I own)

So, congratulations to the Blackhawks for winning. It’s all quite exciting and it was only a matter of time. I’m of the opinion that they should just not carve Hossa’s name on the Cup to piss him off. I’m also a little sick seeing Campbell and Huet get it, but like the case of swine flu I had last June, it’ll pass eventually. It kind of felt like a now-or-never situation for Chicago since their cap is a mess, and I like enough Hawks fans to be the bigger person and congratulate them. We’ll get Stanley next year! (I hope)

In regards to my prediction, I personally believe that I had a pretty good chance of being right. Philadelphia managed to keep it close in several games and looked great in the games they won. Kane’s goal was a fluke and if Leighton wasn’t so bad he might not have even scored it. So whatever. I have no regrets.

But seriously, guys, it makes for a nice story and all, but sometimes waivers goalies AREN’T the answer.

The Pirates Won!

March 30, 2010 at 6:00 am | Posted in Boston Bruins, Buffalo Sabres, Happy!!, Other Teams' Back-up Goalies Kind of Suck, Ryan Miller, Tim Thomas, Tyler Ennis, Winning Is Totally Awesome | 1 Comment

Er, um, the Sabres won. I just got a little confused with all the callups.

I missed some of the game, but isn’t it kind of frightening that a guy can win the Vezina one year and look like TimTom did last night the next? Are we sure we want to risk that with Ryan?

(Let me answer that for you: yes, it’s a chance I’m willing to take.)

I’ve been paying more attention to the lower seeds and while I NEVER underestimate an opponent, the Bruins wouldn’t be the worst first-round matchup for the Caps.

I love Ennis the Menace a bunch. For reals. He’s just a gem.

I may or may not be making an incredibly embarrassing sign for the game on Thursday. It sort of depends on if I have time to make it. Stay tuned.

That Was Exciting.

I didn’t make it through last night’s game. I skipped all of the third except for the last two minutes because I really didn’t feel like watching the Sabres lose to the Senators again. The way the Sabres’ luck goes, they’ll end up playing Ottawa at some point. They’ll get swept. It’ll be ugly. Water will still be wet.

Tonight, however, was just a ton of fun. I live for games like this. Yeah, hard-fought, close games are exciting, but there’s nothing more relaxing for me than watching the Sabres beat the crap out of another team. Derek Roy even got himself a hat trick! That was just so cute. I thought Tyler Ennis played pretty well too. I really liked him when he got called up last time too. Good kid. Neither of the Tampa Bay goalies were very good but hey, I’m not complaining.

And Patty Lala got his 200th career win! I honestly thought he would retire with 199 wins. He even looked pretty good aside from the one goal he gave up. That was kind of ugly.

And perhaps the biggest deal about tonight is that the Buffalo Sabres are going to the PLAYOFFS. I still think they’ll get swept in the first round, but at least they’ll be going. I haven’t had this Sabres-related excitement in several years. It’ll be fun. I can’t wait.

Although if any team could find a way to choke out of the playoffs after already clinching a spot, it would be this team right here.

Haha, Islanders.

I probably shouldn’t laugh, because the Islanders beat the Sabres in a shootout not too long ago, but last night’s game was amusing.  The Caps are being rather ridiculous lately, with all this goal scoring and insane power play work and (with the exception of last night) awesome penalty killing.  The Islanders just sort of rolled over and died in that one.

In the manual they give guys when they get signed in the NHL, one of the rules should be to never block a slapshot with your face, especially when the shot is coming from Alex Ovechkin.  Chances are it won’t work out in your favor.

I don’t like Alex Semin, but holy cow, he’s been fantastic lately.

We’re getting the Caps game in HD tonight but I won’t be here to see it.  Frowny face.  Why is it always in HD when I can’t watch it?

The Sabres crapped out near the end of their road trip and tonight they’re playing in what one could definitely argue is one of those “four point games.”  They and New Jersey are right up there behind Washington (who is starting to pull away).  This is a game Buffalo needs to win, and not just because I want to keep the streak with me in attendance alive, and not just because if they lose and I have to hear about how it’s so hard coming back from the West Coast and turning around and playing a game, I’ll scream.  Yes, players, your lives suck.  You make millions of dollars chasing around a little piece of rubber.  It must be awful to be you.

I know Lala was less than awesome in his last start but Lindy can’t start riding Ryan again, especially with the Olympics coming up.

Oh, and I hate Kerry Fraser.  That’s all for today.

FSN Sucks.

January 22, 2010 at 2:00 pm | Posted in Buffalo Sabres, Happy!!, Losing Sucks, Other Teams' Back-up Goalies Kind of Suck, Pittsburgh Penguins, Sidney Crosby, This Irks Me, Washington Capitals, Winning Is Totally Awesome | 1 Comment

The two worst parts of last night’s (first) game?

1.) Crosby scored.

2.) I had to listen to FSN. For the whole game. It was awful. They were blatant homers, they went out of their way to bash the Caps, and they had no idea what they were talking about as far as Capitals. Tomas Fleischmann isn’t a dirty player, and Kris Letan was out a shift later. Get over it.

Other than that, the game was a ton of fun. I know it’s just the regular season and last year the Caps beat Pittsburgh three times in the regular season and it doesn’t amount to anything, but it was kind of cathartic to win. Take THAT, Penguins.

I’m 99.9% sure I won’t be able to watch the game next time they play each other. I’m pissed.

As for the Sabres, they lost again. This time it was the shootout, so they at least got a point. I conked out before the game even started but it sounded like a really good game. Hopefully the Sabres will play another good game against San Jose but win on Saturday?? I’ll be watching that one. I hope they win. Washington is gaining ground.

Scintillating Commentary.

I’m so tired. I had six million tests today and I have forty-three million over the three days of class I have next week. One of those tests is on material we have not ever learned. None of this paragraph is an exaggeration.

I’m really glad the Sabres beat the Leafs because I’m too tired to come up with anything better to say. Toskala makes me L.O.L.

Stupid Vancouver just effing tied it up. And then Lars lost a faceoff, making it even worse. Chris Clark scored while I was in the car. Bless him, he’s shy.

If it turns out Jeff Carter really did sleep Scott Hartnell’s wife, that just might be the best gift I get this holiday season.

If I make it to the Sabres/Caps game (!!!!!!) Wednesday night it will be a Christmas miracle.

Thus ends my scintillating commentary.

Things That Are Good And Things That Are Bad.

Things that are good:

  • SNOW DAY!!!!!  YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!

Thing that are bad:

  • Still having to study for the reading quiz I’ll have if school isn’t canceled tomorrow.

Things that are good:

  • Ryan Miller.  Holy HELL, is that man good at hockey.  It was totally awesome when Sabretooth was bowing down to him.  He’s so good.  My jaw dropped multiple times.  Ryan, I want to thank you for redeeming yourself this year and making it less embarrassing for me to love you (because I don’t really broadcast it anymore, but I do still love him).  You’re so good at being a goaltender.  Just don’t burn out on me, ‘kay?

Things that are bad:

  • Getting shut out by the Sabres.  Um, Caps, you saw tape from their last two games, right?  Yikes, you need to learn how to score on elite goaltenders.

Things that are good:

  • Chris Clark totally looking at me three times.  Love ya, Christopher.

Things that are bad:

  • Fehric trying to flip me a puck and failing miserably.  Things Eric Fehr is not good at:  Shootouts, flipping pucks to dedicated fans during the pre-game skate.

Things that are good:

  • The Sabres killing off that power play the Caps had early on.  Wowzers, Sabres.  I know you have a great penalty kill, but the Caps have a great power play.  Y0u done good, boys, you done good.

Things that are bad:

  • Jose Theodore.  Varly, please get well soon.  (I realize he made some great saves, but all three goals he let in were really, really bad.)

Things that are good:

  • Alex coming over right in front of me and rattling the boards during the pre-game skate.  There were only a couple other fans by me at that time and they all had Sabres stuff on.  Alex, I love you.  I know I said this last December, but you’re HUGE in person.  And your hair is gross.  Yeah, I went there.

Things that are bad:

  • Alex playing arguably the worst game of his career.  First there was missing the WIDE OPEN NET by four feet.  Then there was the dive.  (My mom said Rob Ray didn’t think it was much of a dive and she didn’t either, but it happened right in front of me, and, well, it was pretty embellished.  Oh, Alex.)  Then he whined at the refs, and then he broke his stick.  That was just embarrassing.  I put up with so much crap from him, and then he broke his stick, and then I screamed “I STILL LOVE YOU ALEX” while he was getting a new one because I’m just trying to be a good fan.

Things that are good:

  • The Gerbe Derby got his first NHL goal!!  Yay!  Nate-dogg, I do love you so.  Congratulations, little man.  You earned it.  I’m glad you survived your collision with Tyler Myers, and I have to admit that it was pretty darn adorable.  Also, darling, picking on David Steckel is not the wisest idea since he’s twice as big as you.

Things that are bad:

  • Monty stealing Nathan’s first goal so he only got one instead of two.  Steve, that was not so nice.

Things that are good:

  • Henrik Tallinder’s goal.  Like, when the eff did he learn how to do that?

Things that are bad:

  • The Caps allowing Henrik Tallinder to score a goal like that.

Things that are good:

  • The first period.  That was an exciting period of hockey, folks.

Things that are bad:

  • The third period.  That was a really sloppy period.

Things that are good:

  • Lars’s hair.

Things that are bad:

  • I, uh, nope.  Got nothing.  Just look at that HAIR!

Things that are good:

  • The Sabres coming out after two crappy games and playing a really solid, great effort.  Way to bounce back, boys.  Y’all make me proud.

Things that are bad:

  • The Caps win streak ending.

Things that are good:

  • I got to see the secret handshake!!!!  Guys, it is even cuter in real life.  I laughed for about fifteen minutes.

Things that are bad:

  • I don’t get to see these two teams play each other in person again until March 😦

    6-2!

December 3, 2009 at 9:33 pm | Posted in Buffalo Sabres, Happy!!, Other Teams' Back-up Goalies Kind of Suck, Washington Capitals, Winning Is Totally Awesome | Leave a comment

    Dear Sabres/Caps,

Any time you want to win 6-2 is fine with me. I love high scoring games and I love fast starts.

    With Love,
    Frostee

    Yay Christopher!!

October 23, 2009 at 6:10 pm | Posted in Atlanta Thrashers, Chris Clark, Frostee Loves Way Too Many Guys, Happy!!, Ilya Kovalchuk, Other Teams' Back-up Goalies Kind of Suck, Washington Capitals, Winning Is Totally Awesome, Zach Bogosian | Leave a comment

Christopher Clark, my secret beloved, scored a goal last night.  It was lovely.  I did a happy dance during the highlights when I saw it.

It wasn’t, however, anywhere near as badass as Jeff Schultz’s goal.  That.  Was.  Hilarious.  Like, seriously, Atlanta.  I love you lots, but goals like that make me want to claw my eyes out.  ‘Cept when Varly assists on them.  Then it’s a-o-k.

The Caps/Thrashers game last night was pretty ridiculous.  I missed the first two periods and my dad was sending me score updates and then when I came home it was 5-2.  Washington ended up winning, but it was by a final score of 5-4.  The Capitals need to work on third periods badly.  I’m a wee bit concerned.

Ilya Kovalchuk is pretty beast.  Just throwing that out there.  I know I say how much I love him, but I never really pay all that much attention to him.  He’s huge.  He’s also insanely good at hockey.  I always knew I liked him.

ZACHITY ZACH SCORED A GOAL FOR ME!!  That is all I have to say about that.

I didn’t look this up for last night in particular, but WHOA, the Capitals took/take a lot of penalties.  It’s redonk.  They must look into this matter and fix this as well.

I’m really starting to regret my decision to babysit for six hours tomorrow night.  I’m totally in the mood for a two-games/Don Cherry Saturday night.

I really don’t know what to think about the Sabres game tomorrow night.  Apparently Tampa Bay beat the Sharks…?  Although from what I’ve seen, the Sharks have looked more like little fishies this year.  They did not impress me when they played Washington.

Just watch this video.  There will never, ever be a time when these three don’t completely crack me up.  I always knew there was a reason I liked the bum in the sweats.

Chris Butler Can Soothe My Aching Heart

October 22, 2009 at 4:00 pm | Posted in Buffalo Sabres, Chris Butler, Dan Paille, Frostee Loves Way Too Many Guys, Happy!!, Matt Ellis, Mike Grier, Other Teams' Back-up Goalies Kind of Suck, Ryan Miller, Tim Kennedy, Tyler Myers, Winning Is Totally Awesome | 1 Comment

I took the Dan Paille trade very hard.  I know he spent almost the entire start of the season here in the press box and I know that Lindy seemed to dislike him or dislike playing him or something like.  But I still loved him and I was still devastated when he got traded.

Enter Chris Butler’s interview from last night.

What a wonderful distraction from Danny.  In addition to being a great player, Christopher is an attractive, well -spoken, articulate guy.  We already knew that; I was blown away by his first game here.  He was amazing during it and his postgame interview was 74 different kinds of cute.  He was supposed to be an emergency call-up but he went and blew us all away and now he’s permanent.  I’ve always had a thing for him, but last night I decided to go and make it official.  Christopher Butler, we’re going to try a little experiment in which you’re my new favorite Sabre.  Congratulations.  Best of luck to you.

(An aside:  I checked Wikipedia and while it has his parents’ names and his siblings names and ages, it doesn’t have his middle name.  1.)  Gosh darn it.  2.)  Why am I so fixated on middle names?  It kind of creeps me out.)

(Another aside:  Of course I still like you, Ryan!  We’ll aways have something special, especially since I have a bobblehead of you.  But for now, I’m trying things with Christopher.  He seems more my type.  And he’s quite a bit closer to my age.)

Last night’s first period was one of the best I’ve ever seen the Sabres play.  I was flabbergasted.  It was awesome.  They just came out and started scoring and didn’t stop for twenty minutes.  They weren’t nearly as good in the second and third period, but the first period was so B.A. that I’m willing to forgive them just this once.

    I love Matt Ellis.

    I love Tyler Myers.

I love the save Ryan Miller made.

I love the chemistry Timmy K and Mike Grier have.

Seriously, who pulls their goalie a minute into a game?  And just for the record, I don’t really think the goalie change jump-started the rest of the players the way they had hoped.

I’m going to miss the first period of the Caps game tonight but after that I’ll be able to watch.  I’m really excited.  We all know how much I love when the Capitals play the Thrashers.

The family I’m selling my soul to babysitting for six hours Saturday night doesn’t have cable.  I won’t be able to watch any hockey.  At all.  It’s going to be awful.  Especially since while I won’t be watching hockey I’ll be having an allergy attack.  I am allergic to cats, and putting the cat in your bedroom while I watch your children does not change that fact.  I’m sorry.
