I know that USA did something special, and when we look back on it we’ll be really proud. And the Canadian fans were really classy during the medal ceremony. But to come that close and then lose to Sidney Crosby hurts. I think I speak for a lot of people when I say that we don’t want to hear about it for the next four years.
Today was the first time I actually full-on, not-just-dust-in-the-eyes cried over a sporting event.
USA! USA! USA!
Sorry for the lack of posting. Things have been crazy. Today, however, I will be doing absolutely nothing this afternoon. I can’t remember the last time I was this excited for a game.
I’m not making any predictions. None. So you kids all have fun today, and we’ll just have to see what happens.
USA! USA! USA!!
USA! USA! USA!! USA!!!
USA vs. Switzerland and the “marquee matchup of the Olympics,” Canada vs. Russia. Tomorrow. Cue hyperventilating.
USA still beat Canada.
My Caps Kids Club fan pack came in the mail today and I am now a card-carrying member of the club. The hat and lunchbox are insanely awesome. It’s lame that I have to redeem my coupon for my Slapshot bobblehead at the Verizon Center, but fortunately I’ll be there in a few weeks and will be able to get it.
Sweden also won last night in the Battle of Henrik Tallinder and Toni Lydman. It sounds as though Lars Nicklas had a very solid game. He’s pretty good, kids. Maybe he’ll start getting recognition for being more than just a product of being Alex Ovechkin’s linemate.
Ryan Miller is still the best goalie evah and one of my favorite Americans evah. Apologies to George W. I still think you did a kicking job with America.
I’m still COMPLETELY FREAKING OUT about Wednesday. I’m not mentally ready for this game. It’s going to be insane.
First off, Alex’s hit on Jagr was fantastic. Umberger’d.
Second, apparently Lars had a nice goal? Aww Nicki, you’re so good. You deserve all the attention you can get.
Third, that game last night was one of the best games I’ve ever seen. USA! USA! USA!! Ryan Miller is amazing. They knew the pressure would be on Canada and they took advantage of. They’re in Canada’s heads now and know they can beat them. I’m so happy.
Fourth, if you thought Canada would be playing Russia the Wednesday BEFORE the medal games even started (and it’s my birthday, do it Russia) raise your hand. Yeah, that’s what I thought.
Today is my last day of vacation, but I’m trying not to think about that. Instead, I’m trying to focus on what could be one of the best days of hockey in a long, long time.
We get to start with Russia. I’m looking forward to watching them in daylight for a change, but I’m still worried that they’re gonna blow this. If they lose today, I’m…..doing something drastic. I don’t know what yet, but it’ll happen. They can’t take the Czechs too lightly. My dad has been rather smug for the past few days because he picked the Czechs to medal before the tournament started and he’s convinced they’ll win today.
Seriously, if you lose to the Czech Republic, it’ll push me off the deep end.
After the afternoon game, we get Canada and USA. This game is going to be so intense. Canada wants to win because they almost lost to the Swiss. USA wants to win because they hate Canada. I want USA to win because even if I’m not “rooting” for them, I still have a soft spot for those yanks. Plus I don’t want Canada to win.
Then we get Sweden vs. Finland, which will be another great game, but it’s at midnight. I’ve gotten my fill of midnight hockey, thank you very much. We can go back to normal times now.
At three in the morning I was sitting on the couch trying not to scream when Alex came out for his third shootout attempt. THAT IS NOT RIGHT. I DON’T CARE IF HE ASKS TO SHOOT, HE SUCKS IN THE SHOOTOUT AND HE’S NOT THE COACH.
I couldn’t tell for sure, since, you know, it was after midnight, but I don’t think Russia looked very good out there. I dunno. I think they have some things to work on and their next game is against the Czechs. They could be in trouble there.
I’m very frustrated by Team Russia right now. Very. Frustrated.
It’s cute how Team USA is doing better than Canada and Russia. Oh you Americans, I could just eat you all up.
The Canada vs. Switzerland game yesterday was insane. That’s good hockey right there, folks. Jonas Hiller isn’t too bad in net.
USA Curling is so bad it’s funny. But I’m a little insulted by Bucky’s article about it in the paper today, because part of what makes curling so magical is that no one understands it. Geez, Bucky. Figure it out.
I will miss most of Sweden’s game today but I expect them to be wonderful. I love those Swedes, they’re so blond and wonderful. That’s the best I can come up with on two cups of coffee.
After I wrote that fascinating, in-depth post on curling (thanks to everyone who tried to explain it to me!) I watched the Russia/Latvia game. It was awesome. Russia has snazzy jerseys, great offense, and I’m sure if they actually tried using an actual power play unit instead of just their normal unit, they’ll be golden. I hear a new unit is in the works for tonight so I look forward to seeing it. They also might want to get Kovie off the penalty kill because that might come back to bite them later on.
Midnight hockey is fun while you’re watching it because you’re tired and everything is funnier. It’s significantly less fun the next morning.
Lars Nicklas was stellar last night. No one ever notices it since he’s on a line with, you know, one of the game’s best, but he’s such a great player. And he looks ever cuter in Sweden’s jersey. I’ve always been a fan of their blue and yellow, and now I love it even more.
Canada played fairly well in their opener as well. I still don’t like them but Iggy’s hatter made me quite warm and fuzzy.
I missed USA’s first game and I’ll miss their second game today. I’m such a bad American, but not being able to see Ryan Miller slowly wear himself out isn’t the worst thing.
I plan on watching more curling until I leave for the movies this afternoon.
I am absolutely in love with automatic icing. It’s smart!! It takes out those dumb races and the pissed off players who think they got there first! It’s safe!!! Do it, Gary.
I’m still waiting for JR to punch Mike Milbury in the face. It’s gotta happen.
All in all, I probably watched somewhere around six hours of curling today. I still do not understand how it’s played or why it’s played, but I think it’s better that way. Curling is a magical sport (?) and I wouldn’t want to ruin the magic.
