A For Effort!

Well, maybe not an ‘A.’  Because Jay Mohr was terrible.  But you know what?  I have now watched the NHL Awards twice through (I’ll explain) and once again I’m reminded of how much I love this sport and this league.

Last night I missed half of the acceptance speeches because we were LOLing too hard (after Ryan’s, we proceeded to thank Noureen for all the other guys when they gave their speeches) and we were complaining too much during Jay Mohr’s stuff to completely appreciate it.  We did, however, enjoy the Bobby Ryan/Ryan Getzlaf skit.  Genius.  It was funny, it was entertaining, even my mother cracked up.  I love things like that.  These guys have such great personalities and the league really should showcase that.

Today I watched my recording of it, which was fantastic.  I could fast-forward through all the awkward banter and bad musical performances and just watch the acceptance speeches and player bits.  It was quite nice.

I’m always down for a good “Alex Ovechkin looks like a caveman” joke, but Bigfoot?  Really?  I also thoroughly enjoyed his acceptance speech.  I’ll be honest, I was surprised he won the Ted Lindsay award.  I knew there was always the chance he’d win but I didn’t actually think he would.  And while him winning that made me think he really did have a shot at the Hart, I’m okay with the way things turned out.  Alex was voted most valuable player by his peers (I pointed this out ad nauseam to my Sidney Crosby fan friend last night around two in the morning until she threw a pillow at me), Hank got recognition from the media for what really was a great season, and Sid got the “we feel bad that we don’t have any other award to give you so we’re giving you this award” award.  HA.

But I must admit, Sid did look completely out of his element last night.  Poor kid.

I have a theory that it was actually Daniel accepting the awards tonight, and I’d like to keep it that way in my mind.

I love Tyler even more for his speech but the poor thing needs a little work on the hair.  God bless his soul, I can’t wait until he wins ten Norris trophies.

Ryan Miller can work skinny ties like it’s nobody’s business.  I’m very picky about who wears skinny ties, but he gets my seal of approval.

Mike Green, this is what you get for being a fatty and a crappy defenseman.  Yay Duncs!

I cried when Theo was accepting his award.  I have no problem admitting that.  What a guy.  I hope he ends up somewhere good next year.

(Seriously, Darcy, I’ve been saying for at least a year that you need to get him here to back up Ryan.  He’d be a great backup!!)

I think I’m going to hunt down Pavel Datsyuk and get him ordained so he can marry me or give a speech at my wedding or something.  That guy is hilarious.

Patrick Kane is going to get herpes before he’s done in Vegas if he’s not careful.  Good grief, Kaner.

And That’s The Season.

Indulge me for a moment and allow me to be the 800th person to comment on how it seems like the season just started. I really can’t believe the playoffs are already here, but they are. Woo!!

The Sabres went out with a bang, pulling Lala who proceeded to crash into the ref and go right into the boards. That seems somehow fitting for what will most likely be his last game in Buffalo. Good luck, Patty. You always seemed like a nice guy.

Buffalo did, however, lose, which means they get Boston in the first round.

1.) This will most likely be the most boring series in the history of the world.

2.) I know that Boston hasn’t been too good this year but Raask has been playing really well and I am a little worried for Buffalo. Miller will be fine barring some sort of meltdown (please God, NO) but it seems like the Sabres just can’t seem to score against Boston. This could be problematic.

I’d like to think that the Sabres will win and I’m trying to be optimistic, but this is the Sabres. I think it really could go either way.

I’m totally over the whole Richard thing. For Alex to keep it that close while missing ten games is really impressive in and of itself. And the season for the team was so magical that it really just would have been extra frosting on the cake, and even I, the frosting queen, know there is such a thing as too much frosting.

The Capitals will be playing the Canadiens in the first round. Montreal has had a few really good stretches this season and Halak had been awesome and I seem to recall Theo having a meltdown in that one came up in Montreal, but I feel like the Caps should be able to get this one done.

Ottawa is playing Pittsburgh, which is convenient because that means one will go home. I can’t decide which team I hate more but I feel like it would be better if the Pens got knocked out first. Thomas Vanek OWNS the Sens now!! The Sabres can beat them!! Their mindtricks will work no more!

I have faith that San Jose will perform their annual chokejob, and I feel really bad that Phoenix has to play Detroit. If they beat the Wings then they truly are blessed.

Shootouts Galore.

Last night the Sabres played Montreal and the Caps played the Pens.  The Caps game was exciting and frustrating and nerve-wracking until the very end, with Inappropriate Older Crush Mike Knuble being the shootout HERO and winning the game.  Jose Theodore has been so good lately I don’t even know how to describe it.  It’s pretty cool.

I didn’t see as much of the Sabres game aside from the last five minutes of regulation, overtime, and the shootout because the five other minutes I did watch at the start of the second period was spent killing Sabres penalties.  It was almost comical.  Good LORD, I thought at a certain point the refs would just stop calling them because it was embarrassing.  Guess not.

Then after I was feeling all warm and fuzzy about the Caps game I flipped back over to see the Sabres score two goals with Miller pulled and then win it in the shootout.  Those DARN KIDS.  I just CAN’T FIGURE THEM OUT ANYMORE.

I do know, however, that with all this happiness and fuzziness surrounding them, they will proceed to lose in heartbreaking fashion tomorrow night against Ottawa.  Those little effers.

I’ve only been half paying attention to the Caps game on now but the Caps are losing and Alex has not regained the goals or points lead and Varly is frustrating me.  Remember how you used to play, Semyon?  Let’s try to play like that!!

At this time in exactly one week I will be in the Verizon Center watching the Capitals play the Thrashers.  I’M.  SO.  EXCITED!!!!

11 STRAIGHT!!!

(I’m still not talking about the Sabres game ever again for as long as I live.  Especially since they play Ottawa tomorrow night.)

The Caps just won their eleventh straight game!!  They made HISTORY!!  They beat the Bruins!!  Weeeee!!!!  (I’ve been amused by the suckiness of the Bruins this year.  They…are not very good at hockey.)

The Caps fell behind early, but they rallied for the win in front of their fathers and brothers.  Mike Knuble (<3) got a goal, as did Brooksie, as did Gordo (!!) as did Alex, with his obligatory empty netter.  The real story tonight, however, is Jose Theodore.  I don’t even really know what to say.  Last night Ryan Miller made me suicidal with his horrendous play, but tonight Theo was stellar.  I just…wow.  Some of those saves were breathtaking.  I guess this is the goalie who won the Hart Trophy.  If he could keep playing like that, I don’t even know what the Caps could do.

They could very realistically finish the season with a thirty point lead in their division.  This is so many different kinds of hilarious.

The Sabres, on the other hand, very realistically could lose their division if they keep giving up important games like the one I’m forgetting even existed.  Ottawa has been on a tear lately and they’re only a few points behind Buffalo.  Tomorrow night is huge.  When If Buffalo loses, to Ottawa, they’ll loose serious ground.  And even if they do manage to keep Ottawa back, it’s getting harder and harder to catch New Jersey, even if they did get shut out by the Leafs tonight.  (Did I just write that the Devils got shut out by the Leafs?  Um, what?)  And they can’t expect to just ride Miller after the Olympics.  It’s a messy situation.  They need to get back to the – gulp – system they were using back when they had so much success.

Tyler was named Rookie of the Month for January!!  Congratulations, Tyler!!  You’re the bestest.

Conflicted.

Last night the Caps played like garbage for 99% of the game and Theodore was like, “Hey, what if I bail my team out? I think I’ll try it!” and then Matt Bradley was like, “Eff this, I feel like winning” and they won. It was insane. They had no business winning but they did.

Then the Sabres started playing. It was 2-0 when I left the room the game was on into go to bed and it was 3-0 when I got to my room. One of my friends stuck out the first period and claims it got to 4-0. Ew. The Sabres can’t win every game, but the few minutes I saw did not look good. Lala got no support but he didn’t make the saves he needed to.

So now the Caps are number one and the Sabres are number two. I’m happy for Washington but I’ve kind of liked the better Sabres this year. Can we just tie at the end of the year? Please?

The Leafs Make Me Laugh(s).

The last time the Caps played the Leafs, it was embarrassing for the Caps.  This time when the Caps played the Leafs, it was still embarrassing…but for the Leafs.  I know I’ve been saying it a lot lately (because for the most part, the teams I like have really been spoiling me), but that game was SO MUCH FUN.  I’ve just been having so much fun watching hockey lately and the hockey has been so much fun to watch and I love hockey.

Theo played very well.  I’m quite proud of him.  Alex also played a great game.  It’s probably one of the best games I’ve seen him play all year.  It seems sort of like he’s evolving into a passer while Lars is evolving into a shooter.  I’m not sure how I feel about that.  I like when Alex scores insane amounts of goals.

I still think Brooks should have gotten the C (yeah, I know, I need to get over that), but Alex has grown on me as captain.  I just can’t help it.  Sorry.

Mike Knuble is totes awesome.  Love him.  Awesome pickup, GMGM.  Now that his finger appears to be healed, he’s once again been doing exactly what the Caps need him to.

Confession:  I have a crush on Tomas Fleischmann.  He’s been really good this year and his impression of Jim Carey in “Dumb and Dumber” cracks me up to the point where I do it every time he scores.  You go, Flash.  Just keep doing what you’re doing.

I get the feeling Ron Wilson hates his team.  A lot.  I certainly don’t blame him, but it must really suck having to coach them every day.  I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of playing against Vesa Toskala.

I still don’t like Jason Chimera.

The Sabres are on Long Island tonight.  Ricky is in net for the Islanders.  I hope Buffalo puts up eight on him.

As Was Expected.

I’m not that upset about the Sabres game since I went into it anticipating a loss.  If anything, I’m glad they at least managed a point.  It was almost funny seeing how long it took for their first shot on goal.  The Sabres simply cannot play a good game against the Senators, and that’s that.  Not really anything else to say.

Derek Roy hasn’t done much of anything this year, but I still hope his injury isn’t too serious.  Although it does open up a spot in the lineup if Patty K really is ready to come back.

This team would be so frighteningly bad without Ryan Miller.

The worst part about last night is that my jersey is now 0-1 and got pulled halfway through the second period.  Although taking it off looked like it might pay off for a while; right after the Sabres scored their two goals.

We need someone who can score in the shootout.

We need a reliable scorer.

The Caps, on the other hand, won a huge statement game against the Devils.  This is the second game in a row they put up four or five goals on an elite goaltender and they didn’t even choke like they usually do when they’re playing New Jersey.  Alex had another three-point night so now he’s only four back of the lead league for points.  He’s ridiculous.  Lars Nicklas had himself a three point night as well, giving him his 200th point and 202 points in 202 games.  That’s…crazy.  I don’t understand why he hasn’t been re-signed yet and Semin has.

What a nice segway for me to use into Semin’s contract.  Um, what?!?  One year?  $6 million?  I don’t get it.  GMGM says it’s what the player preferred and gave him more flexibility.  I still don’t get it.  Players like him don’t sign one year deals.  Moreover, how can he sign a deal for $6 million?  Can they afford that?  Where’s the room to keep Nicki?  If there’s one player who needs to stay it’s him.  He’s just as important to this team as Alex.  Sasha is a great player when he wants to be, but I never saw him as indispensable.  Is George just trying to get him a contract so that he can trade him after the season and not have to worry about that?  They could get a pretty decent return for him, especially if he’s already got a contract.  I’m sure there are plenty of teams who would want him.  I’m just perplexed by the whole situation.  And a little bit angry.  Neuvirth has been really solid the past few games so I’m sure they could trade Theo if they wanted, which would open up more cap room, but there’s still another contract to be signed.  And isn’t it contract year for Flash as well?

Hmm.  It’s just all a little odd.  We shall have to wait and see how it all plays out.

Tonight the Sabres are playing the team of Sir Christopher’s hometown, and hopefully he’ll be able to play.  I’m not sure who Lindy benches to make room for him.  I know he’s the captain, but I’d almost say Rivet after the way he played the past few days…but he is the captain.

Team Sweden announced their roster.  I hope Henrik Zetterberg is back in time to play for them.  They always put together a good team and this looks like another one.  I am a little surprised Henrik Tallinder made the team, but I guess now that his rape case is all cleared up he’s a valuable asset.

Yes.

The Sabres beat the Blackhawks.  2-1.  In regulation.  With Patrick Lalime in net.

I think we can consider this mission a success.

I was watching a game with a friend, ergo, I did not pay the best attention.  However, early in the game they were showing the shots on goal, and were the Blackhawks really leading 12-2?  That made me a wee bit concerned.  In the end, Thomas Vanek and Clarke MacArthur scored their ninth goals (didn’t TV have like forty at this point last season?) and the Sabres nearly shut out the ‘Hawks.

Chicago is a very good hockey team.  Beating them is huge.  I’m so proud of our slugs.

My thoughts are with Mike Grier.  That’s just so sad.

Did Soupy get booed?  I couldn’t hear.  I sincerely hope so.  Just suck it up, Soupster.  Did you really think we were just going to forget everything that happened?

The Caps fell behind 2-0 to the Hurricanes, took the lead 3-2, let EFFING GLEASON score a shorty, then Michael ended it in overtime.

1.)  Jose Theodore has me very, very worried.  Get.  Back.  Soon.  Varly.

2.)  If you did not see Lars’s pass to set up Michael’s game-winner, go watch the highlights right now.  Holy moly, that was beautiful.  I want to have fat blond slick-handed Swedish babies with him.

Alexander Semin also had an excellent night, but, uh, I really don’t feel that way about him.

I’m sitting on children again tomorrow night, so I don’t know how much hockey I’l get to watch.  I do know, however, that the family has CBC, so once the kids have been tucked into bed, I will be enjoying the Caps on HNiC.  Of course I’ll watch the Sabres, but the Rangers make me ill for no apparent reason even though I love Hank.  We shall see how the night progresses.  Another two points are on the line for them, both within the division and the conference.

I can’t believe it’s not even Christmas and I’m already watching the standings.  Stupid Sabres, look what you’ve done to me.

P.S.  The Blackhawks are now 0-1 with me wearing a ‘Hawks shirt.  Sorry about that, guys.

Things That Are Good And Things That Are Bad.

Things that are good:

  • Ryan Miller got a shutout!  And not just a Ryan Miller Shutout, but a real one.  Oh, Ryan.  Your shutouts make me so happy.  I may be freaked out about this spring when you’re so tired you can’t even get your skates on, but I have to admit that I’m completely in love with your badass play right now.
  • Timmy K scoring!  And Jochen scoring!  And Henrik scoring!  Look at all that scoring love right there!
  • Beating the Leafs.  Hahahahaha.
  • Lars getting a three point night.  Larsiepoo, I love you.
  • Jose playing a solid game after having a lot of time off.  Jose, I sincerely hope that you’ve been able to work through your personal issues.  And I’m glad you’re playing well.
  • The Thrashers winning.  I love them.

Things that are bad:

  • OH MY GOD ALEXANDER MOTHER EFFIN’ OVECHKIN WHY DO YOU INSIST ON HURTING ME LIKE THIS???  KNEE-ON-KNEE?  REALLY?  THAT WAS A DIRTY PLAY.  THERE, I SAID IT.  IT WAS DIRTY AND I’M MAD AT YOU AND IF YOUR ACL IS TORN I’LL NEVER TALK TO YOU EVER AGAIN I WILL BE VERY SAD.  YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO BE IN BUFFALO IN A WEEK AND A HALF, MISTER.  I LET IT SLIDE ONCE LAST YEAR BECAUSE YOUR GRANDFATHER WAS SICK AND I LET IT SLIDE IN THE PRESEASON BECAUSE IT WAS THE PRESEASON, BUT ENOUGH IS ENOUGH.  I WILL NOT TOLERATE THIS EVASIVE BEHAVIOR ANYMORE.
  • Now that I’ve worn out my caps lock, let’s continue in a rational manner.  Oh my good golly gosh, that was awful.  I’ve never seen him in so much pain before ever.  This is so bad.  The Capitals are in deep shit without him.  Team Russia needs him.  I want to see him play live.  Lars needs him.  I can’t believe he would do something so dirty.  Stupid, stupid Alexander.

I’m going to go hang out with Little Ryan, because he isn’t pissing me off right now.  Looks like it’ll be time to get the bobblehead bandaids back out again.

I Knew It.

When I sit on the right side of the room in my Caps jersey during the game, they usually win. Note the usually, this way I’m not making an absolute statement and I avoid a jinx.

Tonight was no exception. Alex scored, his arm didn’t fall back off, and Bloody Brads got the game winner. That always makes it a good night. He pretty much owns Pretty Henrik at this point.

Seeing Varly play well makes me happy.

Seeing the Caps score on the power play also makes me happy. This is a team that is supposed to score when they have the man advantage. I expect that from him.

I don’t know what the Caps would do without Brooksie.

I miss Mike Knuble, however, I’m glad Perreault gets to stay up. He’s spectacular. I pretty much adore him.

I hope everything’s ok with Jose. I five him a lot of crap but he’s been through a lot over the past few months.

I’m glad Alex scored. It was about time.

Lars got a penalty after a scrum along the boards. I’m sure it’s from forgetting to say please and thank you, or eating with his elbows on the table, or something along those lines.

If Lala doesn’t play tomorrow night, I will NOT be amused.

In other, non-hockey news, DICK JAURON GOT FIRED!!!!! Ralph, it is about effing time. They’re certainly not going to be any better, but Dick was at least a portion of the problem. Woohoo!
