It’s a really good thing the Sharks never make it out of the first round of the playoffs, because if the Capitals had to play them in the Cup finals they’d be screwed.
It probably won’t come as a surprise to you that I don’t like the Penguins. At all. I hate them. Part of it is that I don’t like how they were forced down our throats, part of it is that I’m still bitter from the Winter Classic, and part of it is that, hello! I’m also a Capitals fan. No Pens love here.
That being said, I was none too pleased when it was 3-0 last night. The Caps had dug themselves in a similar hole last night, my jersey was about to go 0-2, the players all looked like crap, and even worse, Ryan Miller looked like crap. I’ve reconciled myself with the fact that our team isn’t all that special, but we have an insanely good goalie. When even our insanely good goalie is playing badly, I get a little angry.
Then Drew Stafford got a penalty shot.
I know pretty much everyone else has already said it, but that was huge for both him and the team to go out and score on the penalty shot. And it was even bigger for him to score another goal. And then, after I spent the past few games yelling at Jason, it was big for him to go and score another goal. And, of course, Goosie. It was so ridiculously awesome to watch that game and the comeback. These are the games that are so much fun while you’re watching them, and then weeks or months later it’s fun to bring them up. Yes, I do remember when the Sabres came back and kick the Penguins’ collective asses in regulation! Yes, that was an awesome game!
This might have been the highlight of the game. Tyler, you simply are the best.
Steve Montador is kind of wonderful, guys. I’m just throwing that out there. Maybe Darcy totally knew what he was doing.
Patrick Lalime’s numbers since his “little trip” to Portland (Jason, you’re too cute) have been kind of stellar. It was really cool not having to freak out about the backup letting in sixteen goals after the starter let in three soft ones. Patrick Lalime has been very, very good. I love it.
I sort of feel like this whole “getting pulled and then throwing a temper tantrum” is something we’ll have to tread lightly around with Ryan. After the way he looked on the bench, I certainly would be too scared to ask him about it. Be careful on NHL Live today, guys. This is, after all, the guy who mentioned stabbing Scott Gomez.
This was definitely the best game of the season. It was also my favorite game of the season. And these two points are so important since they will be losing to the Thrashers Friday night.
On the Capitals side of things, Jason Chimera wants me to like him. Sorry, Jason. I like that someone is swearing his head off in the background (Michael?) and I love how stupid Alex is (did you know he collects players’ sticks? He’s such a wackadoodle), but I simply cannot love you. Score the Stanley Cup clinching goal and we’ll talk. But for now, we are enemies.
And don’t you dare hug Karl Alzner like that.
Last night the Capitals lost to the pukey Hurricanes 6-3. Eric Staal had a FIVE POINT night. Let that all sink in, kids. 6-3. To the Hurricanes.
Bruce and Brooks and everyone else keeps going on and on about how finding out two hours before a game that two teammates/friends/the captain had been traded wasn’t the reason for their total disinterest in the game. I know they’ve got to say things like that. And part of that game was Theo sucking and Erskine sucking and then both of them sucking together.
But part of it was the trade. You could tell. The guys looked on the verge of tears in the postgame interviews. I don’t understand why the trade had to be made RIGHT THEN. If it had been in the works since September, it could have been done after the game or long enough before that the guys weren’t all in shock on the ice.
I just hope this game isn’t an indication of how things are going to go out in California. That…would be bad.
At one point last night I read somewhere that they wouldn’t rush to name a new captain out of respect for Christopher. Um, two things:
1.) I get that, but right now your team is captainless and after the game last night, they need someone to stand up and tell them they all suck and get them motivated.
2.) You’re really talking about respect for him right after you traded him? For reals?
I’m taking this trade much harder than I probably should, but I’m on break so it’s not like I have other things to think about.
I can’t be mad at Lars Nicklas for taking a double minor because I still can’t stop laughing that he actually high-sticked a guy and did so hard enough to draw blood.
Andrej Sekera made the Slovakian Olympic team. Woo, Reggie! I’m not a huge fan of him and his bald head, but congrats. Gooo Olympics!
I decided that if Paul makes Team USA I might have to splurge and get a Gaustad Team USA jersey. Otherwise I’ll just get an Ovechkin Russia one or a Backstrom Sweden one. My birthday is, after all, in the midst of all the Olympic fun.
If the Sabres fail to score on 17 power plays like they did last time they played Pittsburgh I will flip shit. They also better win this game. I looked for Sidney Crosby when I was at the mall yesterday but alas, it would appear as though he has filled his shopping quota for the month.
THEY TRADED CHRIS CLARK. THEY TRADED THEIR CAPTAIN. WHAT TEAM THAT IS CURRENTLY SITTING IN FIRST PLACE IN THEIR CONFERENCE TRADES THE CAPTAIN?!?!
THIS IS SO AWFUL.
I don’t understand it. I really don’t. I could deal with Jurcina getting traded; I always kind of liked him but business is business and sometimes players have to be moved. But to move CHRIS CLARK?! And he didn’t even realize he was about to be traded? That just seems so…harsh. And in exchange for the two of them, they get the guy who helped lead to Alex’s injury. Excellent job, GMGM. Top notch. This better not mess up the dressing room chemistry.
I was going to write a nice post about how the comeback win for the Sabres was so important after Saturday night and they’re finally playing well in front of Lala and Timmy’s naked chest makes me want to vomit, but I’m too angry.
Right after I heard he got traded I put on my Clark shirt and I’m not taking it off.
George better have something HUGE up his sleeve. I’m not sure if even a Nicki extension could cheer me up right now. What if I never get to see him play ever again? That would be awful!
I’ll never understand why a team would trade their captain. And now who’s going to be the Capitals captain? Knuble already seems like a real leader but maybe they’ll want to give it to someone who’s been on the team longer? I think it’ll come down to Alex and Brooksie. Alex because he’s well, Alex, and Brooks because all I hear about him is that he’s a great leader already and once Christopher’s time was done he was surely in line for the C and I never even listened because I didn’t think they would TRADE THE CAPTAIN. But I could see Brooks getting it. And he’s been in a bit of a slump and he seems like he’s really hard on himself. And plus, the cougars of Washington might kill the Caps management if he didn’t get the captaincy.
I’m so mad. I think I’m just going to sit here and stew a while longer. And I plan on yelling a lot during the game tonight.
Stupid Capitals. Even the Sabres wouldn’t trade their captain.
I’m not that upset about the Sabres game since I went into it anticipating a loss. If anything, I’m glad they at least managed a point. It was almost funny seeing how long it took for their first shot on goal. The Sabres simply cannot play a good game against the Senators, and that’s that. Not really anything else to say.
Derek Roy hasn’t done much of anything this year, but I still hope his injury isn’t too serious. Although it does open up a spot in the lineup if Patty K really is ready to come back.
This team would be so frighteningly bad without Ryan Miller.
The worst part about last night is that my jersey is now 0-1 and got pulled halfway through the second period. Although taking it off looked like it might pay off for a while; right after the Sabres scored their two goals.
We need someone who can score in the shootout.
We need a reliable scorer.
The Caps, on the other hand, won a huge statement game against the Devils. This is the second game in a row they put up four or five goals on an elite goaltender and they didn’t even choke like they usually do when they’re playing New Jersey. Alex had another three-point night so now he’s only four back of the lead league for points. He’s ridiculous. Lars Nicklas had himself a three point night as well, giving him his 200th point and 202 points in 202 games. That’s…crazy. I don’t understand why he hasn’t been re-signed yet and Semin has.
What a nice segway for me to use into Semin’s contract. Um, what?!? One year? $6 million? I don’t get it. GMGM says it’s what the player preferred and gave him more flexibility. I still don’t get it. Players like him don’t sign one year deals. Moreover, how can he sign a deal for $6 million? Can they afford that? Where’s the room to keep Nicki? If there’s one player who needs to stay it’s him. He’s just as important to this team as Alex. Sasha is a great player when he wants to be, but I never saw him as indispensable. Is George just trying to get him a contract so that he can trade him after the season and not have to worry about that? They could get a pretty decent return for him, especially if he’s already got a contract. I’m sure there are plenty of teams who would want him. I’m just perplexed by the whole situation. And a little bit angry. Neuvirth has been really solid the past few games so I’m sure they could trade Theo if they wanted, which would open up more cap room, but there’s still another contract to be signed. And isn’t it contract year for Flash as well?
Hmm. It’s just all a little odd. We shall have to wait and see how it all plays out.
Tonight the Sabres are playing the team of Sir Christopher’s hometown, and hopefully he’ll be able to play. I’m not sure who Lindy benches to make room for him. I know he’s the captain, but I’d almost say Rivet after the way he played the past few days…but he is the captain.
Team Sweden announced their roster. I hope Henrik Zetterberg is back in time to play for them. They always put together a good team and this looks like another one. I am a little surprised Henrik Tallinder made the team, but I guess now that his rape case is all cleared up he’s a valuable asset.
I hope you all enjoyed your day yesterday, whether you celebrate Christmas or Festivus or any other holidays that fell over the past few days. I know I did.
Santa didn’t bring me as many hockey-related gifts as he did last year, but I did get a Sabres calendar, a fleece blanket in Sabres colors (to go with the fleece blanket in Caps colors I had already gotten), and, of course, my new jersey.
It’s so pretty. It’s a third jersey, because the slugs are ugly and I don’t want to wear them and supposedly they’ll be gone after this season. It’s blank. I’m toying with getting it customized with Tyler’s name and number, because I kind of adore him (and it only made me love him more when he ran into Alex Wednesday night and bounced off), but I might just leave it blank because it’s kind of cool like that too. Now, I just have to get to a few Sabres games that the Caps aren’t playing in so I can actually wear the thing to HSBC Arena.
Team Russia’s roster was announced late Thursday night. It was rather exciting. The original list I saw freaked me out a bit because Alex’s name was the second last, but fear not, it was there. It also made me laugh because for Varly it said “Semen Varlamov.” Semen and Jizz, together for the Olympics. Even if he doesn’t see any ice time, which I doubt he will, it’s still really exciting that Varly made the team and will be able to get invaluable experience for Sochi. I don’t know too much about the KHL players on the team, but I do know that the offense is really, really scary. Holy cow. Watch out, everyone. These guys are loaded.
Will Lala be starting tonight? I’m sure the Sabres will lose either way, so they might as well give Ryan the night off. Especially after he gave up five goals Wednesday. It seems like we’ve been seeing an awful lot of the Senators lately even though this is only the third game against them this season. The Senators have been getting a lot of press-time lately, between partaking in poisoning opponents and arson and getting engaged to Carrie Underwood. (Has everyone seen the rock? It’s huge. She’d sink straight to the bottom.) Alfie and Spezza are out and Heatley is gone so the Sabres won’t have to deal with that, but I still have no faith in them against this team.
After the way the Caps manhandled the Sabres and put five past Miller, I’m looking forward to seeing how they handle Marty Brodeur tonight. If they get swept by the Devils I might cry.
Now, off to go eat all the leftover Christmas cookies.
During the first intermission tonight, we were treated to an interview in which Drew Stafford discusses Festivus. I was really impressed by this video for two reasons:
1.) Videos like this are pretty much the norm for a lot of other teams, but one gripe I’ve always had about the Sabres is that after a crappy game or when I’m in the mood for warm and fuzzy Sabre-love, there aren’t any hilarious/ridiculous/cute videos to watch. I like that we get to see a guy’s personality for once.
2.) The biceps. Two tickets for the gun show, please!!
(Lindy didn’t hurt at the end either: “I don’t even know why you would ask me such a stupid question.” Lindy, you’re not so bad.)
On the other side, Alex was dancing along to some techno music at the end of the game. I sincerely hope someone gets it up on Youtube.
While the intermission was rather enjoyable, the game itself was crap for the Sabres. They sucked in the first period, they played a great second period, and then they sucked/spent too much time in the box in the third period. Ryan Miller looked like the Miller of old on the first two goals, and if we’re going to start seeing more of that I will scream. The penalty killing didn’t hold up when they needed it the most. The power play continues to suck major ass. I can’t even articulate how bad it is. I…..it…..nightmares….
AND they play Ottawa next, so, you know, kicks and giggles, sunshine and lollipops. I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see Lala start after Miller gave up five goals tonight, and also since December 26 is the most popular day for backups to start. (That’s one of my favorite statistics, by the way.)
The Caps, on the other hand, played a really great game. They started quickly, they didn’t lose their heads when the Sabres cut it down to a one-goal lead, and the finally managed to get something going on the two-man advantage. Their 5-3 was horrible Saturday night and their power play wasn’t much better up in Canada, so to see them get two goals with the advantage when they needed it was nice. Unfortunate it had to happen against the Sabres, but at least it happened.
I don’t get to see these two teams play each other again until March. Frowny face.
Neuvy was pretty good last night. He didn’t see any action in the first period, but he was rather solid in the second.
Lars scoring makes me all warm and fuzzy.
It’s about time Tim Connolly tried to make something happen. I really like how he’s been working hard and justifying his contract.
I enjoyed all the faceoffs Goosie and David took against each other. I’d have to check the actual statistics, but I think Paul had the upper hand this time.
Steve Montador is only a little gross without his fake tooth in.
LOL moment of the night: Mike Green saying he likes blocking shots. Sure thing, Michael. Whatever you say.
He’s so cute when he tries to pretend he actually gives a crap about defense.
Have a very safe and happy holidays, everyone, and enjoy Festivus!! Thanks again for reading. You’re all the bestest.
I don’t have to go to school for almost a week and a half. That’s…not that much time off. Whatevs, I’ll deal.
It looks like the game tonight will be Neuvirth versus Miller. This could be quite interesting as Neuvy gives up lots of goals but the Sabres have no offense, and Miller never lets anything in but as we all know, the Caps certainly have a good handle on putting pucks in the net. It will be interesting to see which side breaks down first.
I really want to wear my Caps jersey tonight but I don’t want it to appear like I’m favoring one team over the other. Perhaps if I put on my Miller t-shirt underneath the hockey gods will understand?
These are two really good teams playing tonight. There, I said it. The Sabres are a really good team. That may be due entirely to the fact that Ryan Miller is insane and ridiculous and makes me feel less stupid for having a Ryan Miller poster (hey, it was $.25!!), but they’re still a good team. The Caps are the Caps.
I kind of want a high-scoring game tonight. Also, Alex needs to break his contract rules and score a hat trick so he can just freaking regain the lead in the goals race. I will NOT stand for Gaborik beating him. I won’t have it!
I only have one more day of school to get through before I’m free. Yes, vacation will be considerably less awesome now that I have TWO major tests the first two days back, but I’m going to try to enjoy the first few days of it without thinking about the hideous amounts of work I have to do.
(An aside: For reals, who assigns a major test the first two days back and who reschedules one a week and a half later after a week straight of no school? Ridiculous. I don’t like it.)
I was unable to watch the Sabres game last night, as I was hiding the body cramming for the test we were lead to believe was today. From what I’ve read, it sounds like the Sabres played a fairly crappy game, Ryan Miller was outrageous, Derek Roy won it all for them in overtime. The crap and Ryan Miller parts sound about right.
Um, did Tyler get hurt last night?!?! Not cool, Tyler. I don’t like when you’re hurt. Fix that discomfort and heal up.
It’s nice to hear Sir Christopher was skating again. I miss him ever so much and hope he returns soon. Poor dear, he hasn’t been able to help any old ladies cross the street in ages!
Just in case you had all forgotten, THE SABRES PLAY THE CAPITALS AGAIN TOMORROW!! WEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!! So exciting. Not much to report on the Caps front other than they took four of six points on their road trip, Varly won’t be playing tomorrow night, and Alex has gotten even FATTER. Dude, for the love of all that is holy, lay off the nachos. Fat does not sit well on you. I know you want to work Lars’s babyfat look, but trust me, the abs were bad.
And that’s all I have to say for now.
This is a little delayed, but Saturday night the Caps scored four straight goals in the third period to beat the Oilers 4-2.
It was lots of fun. It made staying up worthwhile.
