Last night the Sabres played Montreal and the Caps played the Pens. The Caps game was exciting and frustrating and nerve-wracking until the very end, with Inappropriate Older Crush Mike Knuble being the shootout HERO and winning the game. Jose Theodore has been so good lately I don’t even know how to describe it. It’s pretty cool.
I didn’t see as much of the Sabres game aside from the last five minutes of regulation, overtime, and the shootout because the five other minutes I did watch at the start of the second period was spent killing Sabres penalties. It was almost comical. Good LORD, I thought at a certain point the refs would just stop calling them because it was embarrassing. Guess not.
Then after I was feeling all warm and fuzzy about the Caps game I flipped back over to see the Sabres score two goals with Miller pulled and then win it in the shootout. Those DARN KIDS. I just CAN’T FIGURE THEM OUT ANYMORE.
I do know, however, that with all this happiness and fuzziness surrounding them, they will proceed to lose in heartbreaking fashion tomorrow night against Ottawa. Those little effers.
I’ve only been half paying attention to the Caps game on now but the Caps are losing and Alex has not regained the goals or points lead and Varly is frustrating me. Remember how you used to play, Semyon? Let’s try to play like that!!
At this time in exactly one week I will be in the Verizon Center watching the Capitals play the Thrashers. I’M. SO. EXCITED!!!!
School is interfering with everything. It’s so lame. No one wants diagrams of the hearts distracting them from Jason Pominville getting a hattrick. (And bless him for that, what a good little boy!)
I was pleasantly surprised by the Sabres game Thursday night. It was fun. They scored lots of goals. Until he forgot that this is the 2009-10 season, Ryan was pretty darn good. That one save on Vinny was wonderful.
I still have no faith in the Sabres to win tonight. It’s a trust thing. I started trusting them, they stabbed me in the back, and now I simply can’t trust them. Plus I would think Lalime would have to start either tonight or tomorrow afternoon, and we all know how well those games go.
The Caps lost in overtime because I complimented Fat Mike (the hockey player formerly known as Michael) earlier in the day and he got rather overconfident and proceeded to make bad decisions near the end of the game. Eric Fehr, however, continues to be totally awesome. I wuv him. He’s so good this year. I’m especially fond of him playing with Flash. There was just something about the two of them back when the Caps were here earlier in March.
I’m worried about Varly. I’m sorry. I can’t help it.
In a recent episode of Caps Red Line I was watching the other day while procrastinating, Lars Nicklas revealed to us that he likes to talk a lot on the plane. I feel like he’s the hyperactive little kid on the team who gets all wound up on sugar and starts bouncing off the walls until Uncle Mike Knuble takes him over to the corner and makes him calm down. It’s a really amusing mental picture.
Lars Nicklas Backstrom is SO GOOD and I don’t know why he hasn’t been re-signed yet.
Yesterday was Mama Ovechkin’s birthday. We’re a big fan of her over here, so happy birthday Mama O!!
Patrick Kaleta interrupted an Adam Mair joke when he scored. Thanks, kiddo.
I watched about five minutes of that game and everyone who saw the whole thing confirmed that it was really boring.
Ryan was so cute on The Today Show. We done good, Buffalo.
The Caps are no longer undefeated at home this year, but at least they got a point after Varly just sort of rolled over and died.
Mama O ACTUALLY CUT Alex’s hair. I missed the first two periods so I thought that was just the running joke, BUT NO. That’s great. Really great. She should just get props for actually holding him down long enough to cut it, because all the guys I know do not like it when their moms whip out the scissors.
They sure don’t call ‘em the Laffs for nothing!!
This game was highly entertaining. TYLER scored two goals, the Sabres collectively were very good on the power play, and their penalty kill was spectacular they didn’t kick around the short bus kids too terribly much. Seriously, though, at one point I just sat there and laughed while the Sabres were on the penalty kill. God bless those Leafs. They sure do try.
I don’t think the Sabres are ever going to lose again, and I certainly don’t think they’ll ever lose to the Leafs.
That Phil Kessel has been, uh, pretty darn good lately!
Brian Burke said “lovely” on the radio yesterday. I was not aware that that word is in his vocabulary.
Dude, Kevin just reminded me that the Leafs traded away Tuukka Rask. AHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH IT JUST GETS FUNNIER!
If Tyler Myers does not win the Calder Trophy, I will be even angrier than I will be if Alex does not win the Maurice Richard Trophy. And trust me, guys, that is so angry no one will want to be in a ten-mile radius of me.
Last night the Caps stuck it to the Senators, wahoo! Nicki got two (WHERE is his EXTENSION?) and Alex finally got one. Yay, happy, joy, smiles. Semyon Varlamov will never play hockey ever again, however. Poor Varlaay.
Apparently my mom almost got into a fight with a drunk Leafs fan at the game. That would have made my life, because my mother is not exactly the type of person who gets into fights at hockey games.
Tyler, you’re just the cutest. But I’m pretty sure you were never “peewee.”
I like how everyone was legitimately concerned that the Leafs would tie it up at the end. Guys, two things:
1.) I realize the Leafs were “putting on the pressure” and the Sabres couldn’t even get the puck, but they’re the Leafs. They are the LEAFS.
2.) We had Ryan Miller in net, playing against the Leafs. Ryan does not choke against the Leafs.
Ryan Miller just said “take the punch like a man.” There is a reason I love this man. Although there are a few signs that he actually might be a psychopath after all…
All in all, the Sabres have won six straight and they’ve been all sorts of games. Come from behind, 1-0, lots of goals, “cutting it close at the end.” I love every single one of them so very much. I think they might actually possibly be good at hockey. It’s a really cool feeling.
I hope you all enjoyed your day yesterday, whether you celebrate Christmas or Festivus or any other holidays that fell over the past few days. I know I did.
Santa didn’t bring me as many hockey-related gifts as he did last year, but I did get a Sabres calendar, a fleece blanket in Sabres colors (to go with the fleece blanket in Caps colors I had already gotten), and, of course, my new jersey.
It’s so pretty. It’s a third jersey, because the slugs are ugly and I don’t want to wear them and supposedly they’ll be gone after this season. It’s blank. I’m toying with getting it customized with Tyler’s name and number, because I kind of adore him (and it only made me love him more when he ran into Alex Wednesday night and bounced off), but I might just leave it blank because it’s kind of cool like that too. Now, I just have to get to a few Sabres games that the Caps aren’t playing in so I can actually wear the thing to HSBC Arena.
Team Russia’s roster was announced late Thursday night. It was rather exciting. The original list I saw freaked me out a bit because Alex’s name was the second last, but fear not, it was there. It also made me laugh because for Varly it said “Semen Varlamov.” Semen and Jizz, together for the Olympics. Even if he doesn’t see any ice time, which I doubt he will, it’s still really exciting that Varly made the team and will be able to get invaluable experience for Sochi. I don’t know too much about the KHL players on the team, but I do know that the offense is really, really scary. Holy cow. Watch out, everyone. These guys are loaded.
Will Lala be starting tonight? I’m sure the Sabres will lose either way, so they might as well give Ryan the night off. Especially after he gave up five goals Wednesday. It seems like we’ve been seeing an awful lot of the Senators lately even though this is only the third game against them this season. The Senators have been getting a lot of press-time lately, between partaking in poisoning opponents and arson and getting engaged to Carrie Underwood. (Has everyone seen the rock? It’s huge. She’d sink straight to the bottom.) Alfie and Spezza are out and Heatley is gone so the Sabres won’t have to deal with that, but I still have no faith in them against this team.
After the way the Caps manhandled the Sabres and put five past Miller, I’m looking forward to seeing how they handle Marty Brodeur tonight. If they get swept by the Devils I might cry.
Now, off to go eat all the leftover Christmas cookies.
As usual, I started the game with conflicting feelings. Then Alex scored, and, um, well, you can figure out who I started rooting for after that.
I was really impressed with the Caps tonight. They managed to hold on to a lead in a game that was 1-0 for the majority of it, and they even managed to kill off lots of penalties late. Holy sweet mother of mercy, Mike Green even played DEFENSE. Like, how does that even HAPPEN? It must have been some sort of Thanksgiving miracle. I’m fully confident he will return to suckiness Saturday night. But it was kind of nice seeing him clear the puck out and do various defensive things. Totally weird to watch, but nice.
Varly, you’s a crazy mofo. ILY even if you do think American girls are really fat.
Lars played a very, very good game tonight. Lars has not been as good as he is known to be as of late, so to see him play so well was quite rewarding. He didn’t get any points, but he looked great out there. Just for that, my dear boy, you can have extra pie tomorrow night. Yes, yes, I know how generous that is. But Thanksgiving is a time for not worrying about our muffin tops.
Christopher Sr. continued to be far too shy to actually score a goal with me watching. Bless his heart.
At one point both of my Christophers were on the ice. It was so nice to have all my beloveds in one place.
The Caps played a great game and deserved the win. Pats on the backs for you, Capitals.
The Sabres, on the other hand, make me think that they will never ever play a decent hockey game ever again. How long has it been since they won? Three weeks? Four weeks? Good grief, they looked awful tonight. THEY DO NOT SHOOT THE PUCK. How many times do I have to tell them? SHOOT THE GOSH DARN PUCK, YOU ANTI-PUCK SHOOTERS!
Ryan Miller is keeping this team alive right now. He had absolutely NO support on the Fehr goal. Guys, one of these days he’s going to get hurt again or burn out or have a nervous breakdown, and then what are you going to do? How will you even make it on to the ice if he’s not there to bail you out every two seconds?
The power play sucks so bad I’m not even going to say anything else about it.
Except this: OMG Craigory when you have a five minute power play taking a penalty is so not cool.
(On the flip side, it was totally B.A. how the Caps killed off almost a five minute power play.)
Timmy K’s dad is a cutie-pie.
Ok, so, I guess it’s time to get to that hit. Here’s the dealio, guys: Alex hit Patty K. Yes, he did. Patrick’s head definitely got hit, but he kinda sorta saw him coming. And I don’t think it was a vicious head-hunting hit. The ejection was probably more deserved than not, but I’d be kind of surprised to see a suspension. And not just because of who he is.
Alex also always scores pretty goals against Buffalo. Buffalo seems to bring out both the best and the worst in him.
Andrew Peters tried to kill someone tonight, apparently. Petey, Petey, Petey. New Jersey has changed you. I miss the cute, cuddly body guard you used to be.
Vanek must still be hurt. He’s got to be. It’s the only explanation for why he’s been so bad lately. Oh, Thomas. Just get your booboos fixed so you can return to being an awesome goal scorer.
The anthem singer tonight looked like a mini Mike Grier. It was rather adorable.
Henrik Tallinder was on the ice for Alex’s goal. I totally called that.
Finally, before I wish you a very happy Thanksgiving and thank you all for reading, I’d like to pass judgment on Alex’s new haircut. Well done, Mr. Ovechkin. Usually your haircuts are pretty tragic, but this one looks great. It’s not too short, but you’ve taken care of that sloppy mess on your head. I love it.
But please, sweetheart, next time refrain from picking your nose while the camera’s on you.
Games against Ottawa always end badly. It does not matter who’s in net for the Sabres. It doesn’t matter what kind of streak both of the teams are on. When the Sabres meet the Senators, things get ugly.
When Patrick Lalime is in net, it’s just worse.
I can’t remember which goal it was (they all started to blur together), but there was NO ONE screening Lala and he let the puck fly on in over his glove. It was awful. It was terrible. I’m probably going to wake up in a cold sweat at three in the morning because of it. Oh, Lala. I love you, I do. I just wish you didn’t suck. Sometimes it’s not you. There are rare occasions when it’s the asshats in front of you. But sometimes it is you, and that makes me sad.
I switched over to the Caps game because the Sabres were making me angry. When I checked back a few minutes later, it was 5-3. ?? I guess I missed a Pommer goal. That’s a bummer. I do love when Papa Jason scores.
I hate Ottawa.
The Capitals also played tonight, against the Leafs. Alex scored first and everyone was happy in the land, then they all forgot to play the rest of the game except Varly. He kept them alive and he’s the only reason they made it to the shootout.
Why does Bruce put Fehr out in shootouts? It’s painfully obvious he’s got some sort of shootout jinx.
The Caps play Monday night, but the Sabres don’t play again until Wednesday, when they play…………the CAPITALS!!! WOOO!!! I’m so excited, I’m almost forgetting about how mad I am at them.
But I’m still mad. 5-3 to Ottawa is bad stuff, guys. Pull it together before Wednesday night.
When I sit on the right side of the room in my Caps jersey during the game, they usually win. Note the usually, this way I’m not making an absolute statement and I avoid a jinx.
Tonight was no exception. Alex scored, his arm didn’t fall back off, and Bloody Brads got the game winner. That always makes it a good night. He pretty much owns Pretty Henrik at this point.
Seeing Varly play well makes me happy.
Seeing the Caps score on the power play also makes me happy. This is a team that is supposed to score when they have the man advantage. I expect that from him.
I don’t know what the Caps would do without Brooksie.
I miss Mike Knuble, however, I’m glad Perreault gets to stay up. He’s spectacular. I pretty much adore him.
I hope everything’s ok with Jose. I five him a lot of crap but he’s been through a lot over the past few months.
I’m glad Alex scored. It was about time.
Lars got a penalty after a scrum along the boards. I’m sure it’s from forgetting to say please and thank you, or eating with his elbows on the table, or something along those lines.
If Lala doesn’t play tomorrow night, I will NOT be amused.
In other, non-hockey news, DICK JAURON GOT FIRED!!!!! Ralph, it is about effing time. They’re certainly not going to be any better, but Dick was at least a portion of the problem. Woohoo!
I was out to dinner and consequently missed the first period. I hear it was wonderful. It certainly sounds as though it was. They finally scored on the power play? Wooooo!! The second period was fast, but I was not at all pleased with the lack of shots and the plethora of penalties taken by the Sabres. Then Sir Christopher had to stand up for Ryan, as he’s a chivalrous soul and protecting his goaltender is one of his money duties. Then the Flames tried to beat up Clarkey, then Goosie beat up Phaneuf. I liked the last one a lot. I don’t like Phaneuf, and I do like Goose, so I enjoy seeing the latter punch the first. Serves you right, Dion.
It was really great getting to see Jarome Iginla. He’s an incredibly talented player and we don’t ever get to see him because he’s aaaaallll the way on the west coast.
The Sabres took sixteen too many penalties tonight. Good heavens, they looked like last year’s box-loving Caps.
I thought RJ was going to stroke out in the last thirty second of overtime. Rick, you are not as young as you used to be. Don’t overexert yourself.
The game ended up in the shootout, and, miracle of miracles, the Sabres pulled out the win. Oooh!! Aaah!! Weee!! Good job, Sabres. You ended up with a grand total of six shots on goal (going from the two periods I saw), but you managed the win. Excellent, excellent. I know this is asking far too much of you, but a win tomorrow night would be superb. Philly is a scary, intimidating team, but I have complete faith in you. Put your mind to it, boys, and you can do it. All in all, though, tonight you played a highly entertaining game. Much better than Wednesday night. Thank you.
There’s no way Lala starts tomorrow night.
The Caps played the Wild. Perrault continued to be badass. Mike Knuble broke his finger and is out 3-4 weeks and I am very sad. I love Mike Knuble. Mike Knuble is a good leader and he’s good at killing penalties and he liked my sign. Poor Mike Knuble. Varly is slowly working his way back into my good graces. The Caps have issues to work out, but they’ve looked pretty darn good over the past few games (aside from giving up 3 quick ones to the Islanders and then borderline choking in the final minute against them and taking eleven rounds of the shootout to beat them). I like it.
The Hurricanes lost their 14th straight game. It used to be really funny when everyone was wondering if they’d make it to ten. Now it’s just sad. Should we send in aid? Is there something we can do to put them out of their misery?
The Thrashers beat the Kings 7-0. This is totes awesome. Thrashers, you rock. I love you. Ilya, Evander, AND Zachity Zach all scored. That’s what we call an awesome game. I should have watched it. I’ve never tried watching three games at once before. I mis try this some time. Atlanta is certainly worthy.
I got tapped last minute for babysitting gig tomorrow night. I’ll be able to watch the Sabres after the kiddies go to bed and they get CBC, but I will be unable to see the Capitals. This pretty much guarantees that Alex will come back and score a hat trick. Awesome.
I had asked the Sabres to win in a fashion similar to the one they used to beat Edmonton last year. Instead, they beat the Oilers 3-1, and that’s including the empty net goal.
I’ll be honest, until the last five minutes I thought this game was pretty boring. The Sabres continued to not score on the power play (OH MY GOD THEIR POWER PLAY IS SO BAD) but they managed to beat a team playing its third game in four nights. They really needed this win.
Ryan Miller stood on his head yet again. We’re kind of screwed when he finally tires out.
Scary moment near the end when Clarke sent a player into the boards. Clarkey is by no means a dirty player, but I’m just glad we didn’t see any stretchers.
The penalty kill resulting from the hit was spectacular. I was worried from experience that the Sabres would completely collapse, but they pulled it together. Magnificent job, boys. Magnficent.
But can your next game please be exciting?
As for the Caps, it was already 3-1 five minutes into the game, and it ended 5-4. Thank the merciful hockey gods, this time the Caps won it.
Semin decided to be all crazy and scored twice. Eric scored a gorgeous goal during the game and then had a brainfart of epic proportions during the shootout. Varly was awesome stepping in for Theo. Christopher (!!!) won it in the 83rd round of the shootout, and we all lived happily ever after.
