Note the usually, this way I’m not making an absolute statement and I avoid a jinx.
Tonight was no exception. Alex scored, his arm didn’t fall back off, and Bloody Brads got the game winner. That always makes it a good night. He pretty much owns Pretty Henrik at this point.
Seeing Varly play well makes me happy.
Seeing the Caps score on the power play also makes me happy. This is a team that is supposed to score when they have the man advantage. I expect that from him.
I don’t know what the Caps would do without Brooksie.
I miss Mike Knuble, however, I’m glad Perreault gets to stay up. He’s spectacular. I pretty much adore him.
I hope everything’s ok with Jose. I five him a lot of crap but he’s been through a lot over the past few months.
I’m glad Alex scored. It was about time.
Lars got a penalty after a scrum along the boards. I’m sure it’s from forgetting to say please and thank you, or eating with his elbows on the table, or something along those lines.
If Lala doesn’t play tomorrow night, I will NOT be amused.
In other, non-hockey news, DICK JAURON GOT FIRED!!!!! Ralph, it is about effing time. They’re certainly not going to be any better, but Dick was at least a portion of the problem. Woohoo!
I Am Tired And I Am Cranky.

This is pukey and disgusting and gross and yucky and I don’t ever want to talk about it ever again. End of story, goodbye.
Well, no. I’m just tired and by extension, I’m not in the best of moods. I wanted the Sabres to compete tonight and play hard and at least make it a close one. Yes, Tyler scored to make it 4-2, but I didn’t see that goal and they still ended up losing. Not cool, Buffalo. Not. Cool.
After the second period I kind of gave up on them and flipped over to the Capitals game. Whatever. At least they won.
Ryan Miller has been really good so far this season, but if he’s in net tomorrow night I will flip shit. Lindy, STOP PLAYING HIM. OMG HE’S GOING TO BREAK.
Jose has been really good too. This makes me happy, but this confuses me. Jose, you’re supposed to suck and make me want to hurt people. What is this?
I’m glad Derek finally started scoring. Thank you, D. I appreciate it.
Tim Kennedy is just good at life. He and Mike Grier are so awesome together.
I wonder how many posts I’m going to write this year that involve the sentence “Timmy K and Mike Grier rock my socks when they play together on a line.”
I’m a bit perplexed by the Flyers. First, they’re so good and they’re amazing and they could ever win the Stanley Cup! Then they’re a one-line team. They certainly have a few injuries, but I don’t like using that as an excuse. It seems like such a copout. Half the players are going to be injured by the time you get to the Cup finals; you need to suck it up and be able to get past injuries during the regular season.
I like Mo the Second.
The Capitals are all breaking one by one. If something happens to Lars I don’t know what I’ll do with myself.
This post is very rambly. I apologize. I’m watching last night’s “Project Runway” and I’m really worried that Christopher is going to make it to Fashion Week.
Wee!
October 28, 2009 at 9:52 pm | In Atlanta Thrashers, Buffalo Sabres, Chris Butler, Clarke MacArthur, Happy!!, Ilya Kovalchuk, Jason Pominville, Jose Theodore, Mike Grier, New Jersey Devils, Players, Ryan Miller, Thought-provoking Stuff, Tim Kennedy, Tyler Myers, Washington Capitals, Winning Is Totally Awesome | Leave a CommentI know that this was exactly how Buffalo started out last year and I know it’ll all start going downhill soon enough (probably around the time Ryan gets completely exhausted at the Olympics), but for now, I’m completely enjoying the Sabres’ success. They’re winning, and they’re beating good teams. This is fun.
Marty Brodeur has not looked good this season. At all. I’m ecstatic that Timmy got his first NHL goal (AAAHHH!!! TIMMY!!! I LOOOOOOOOVE YOU!!), but Marty did not look good at all.
Ryan Miller will soon hurt himself/get too cranky to play well/get exhausted by the Olympics as I mentioned above, but for now, I’m thoroughly enjoying his awesomeness. Ryan, you’re not so bad when you’re playing well.
We ended up getting the Devils feed for the game which was annoying in that I couldn’t hear Rick and Harry, but was cool in that I could hear what other announcers (namely, Doc) think about the Sabres. I agree, boys. Chris Butler was a wonderful find.
I can’t believe Clarke MacArthur already has five goals. This is redonk. He’s got to stop scoring at some point. It’s not like he could get thirty.
I’m pretty sure Pommer got his third of the season in February last year.
Mike Grier and Timmy K playing together continues to amaze me. I love the two of them. They’re so good together. Their chemistry is spectacular.
Lots of NHLers have been struck with swine (or at least are coming clean about when they had it) today. I hope none of the Sabres catch it. And I hope Quintin Laing doesn’t get any of my beloveds in Washington sick.
Tonight was Tyler Myers’s ninth game, but there wasn’t seriously any drama surrounding it, was there? There’s no way they can send him back to juniors. No. Way. I will jump off a bridge or something drastic and (only slightly) unnecessary like that.
Tomorrow night the Caps play the Ilya-less Thrashers. It will be in HD, which makes me happy. I’m sad Ilya got hurt, and in a contract year, no less, but his absence makes the Caps’ job a bit easier. I would love for them to continue this sick-nasty winning streak they’ve got going.
Speaking of contract years, I’ve been feeling rather warm and fuzzy towards one Jose Theodore as of late. It’s not secret around here that he and I never really got along very well (scroll down to the earlier ones), so this fondness is a new territory for me. I don’t think he’s the same goalie that won a Hart trophy a few years back, but he’s been the better goalie for the Capitals to this point in the season. I just hope that IF the Caps re-sign him, he doesn’t start sucking again. I really hate when players only play well in contract years.
If/when Buffalo loses to Toronto, I will cry. I’m just letting you all know.
Huzzah!!
October 15, 2009 at 9:58 pm | In Alex Ovechkin, Buffalo Sabres, Happy!!, Jose Theodore, Lars Nicklas Backstrom, Semyon Varlamov, Washington Capitals, What Is Up With All These Injuries?, Winning Is Totally Awesome | 1 CommentThe Caps ended their four-game slide in dramatic fashion, sticking it to the Sharks 4-1 Yay!! Whoop whoop!! I need to have panic attacks about my teams more often. It seems to pay off.
Alex got two goals, but he decided to be a butt-head and not got for le tour du chapeau. Whatevs, boyfriend. We’l get there next time.
I think Lars said a potty word when they showed him congratulating Alex after the game. This concerns me because not only was it a potty, it was a really, really bad one.
Theo left the game. I never thought I’d say this, but….I hope it’s not too bad. We need him. If we don’t have him, that’s bad. Although Varly was pretty sparkly filling in.
I won’t be able to see most of the Sabres game tomorrow since I’m an awesome sister and I’ll be supporting my brother and the middle school band at the football game. I’m planning on freezing to death. I sincerely hope the Sabres beat the Islanders. That would be nice.
It snowed earlier today!! Yay!!!!
Happy!
October 1, 2009 at 9:31 pm | In Alex Ovechkin, Boston Bruins, Brooks Laich, Buffalo Sabres, Happy!!, Jose Theodore, Lars Nicklas Backstrom, Washington Capitals, Winning Is Totally Awesome | Leave a CommentWoo!! Go Caps!!
I’m quite impressed with this team. They played great defense, great offense, and great special teams. Brooksie got two goals, as did Alex. Theo was almost flawless (dude, what was that?) Lars got three points. Michael actually threw a hit.
For the past two months I’ve been walking around telling anyone who would listen that I have this feeling about the Caps this year. One game isn’t an indication of how the season will play out, but Washington sure did look capable against another contender. They still have kinks to work out too, but they’re getting there.
I also blathered endlessly about how Alex’s hunger and desire to match what the Penguins did last year would be a major driving force, and it certainly looked that way. Two goals and an assist, throwing hits, all his usual shenanigans. (Let’s not talk about that penalty at the end.) He wants to win this year. It’s obvious, and I love it. I’m glad his passion and drive were all evident tonight.
So well done, Capitals. You met my high expectations, and now I’m uber excited for Saturday night.
And Sabres, don’t think I’ve forgotten about you. I have high expectations for you as well Saturday night. I truly believe you can actually score a goal. And I wouldn’t mind if you decided to win either.
Nine Is A Magic Number
September 30, 2009 at 4:22 pm | In Jose Theodore, Mike Weber, Nathan Gerbe, Tim Kennedy, Tyler Myers | Leave a CommentSo. Nathan has been returned to Portland, but Timmy made the cut. As much as I love my little Gerbe Derby, TK was better than him in the preseason. Darcy, I approve.
Mike Weber has also been returned, and while I’m sure he’s pissed as hell, his preseason performance makes me think he needs a bit more time getting ready for the NHL. He bugged me.
As I’m writing this Tyler hasn’t been sent back to juniors yet, and I think this is a good thing. I’m not saying he’s ready for full-time NHL duties yet, but he at least needs those nine days to see what he has to do improve on. With Toni and Drew hurt, the least we can do is give him a chance.
Supposedly Jose is starting tomorrow night in Boston. This really angers me. Varly for starter!!!
Schedule Day! (The Bad Kind)
August 22, 2009 at 4:50 pm | In Buffalo Sabres, Contracts, David Steckel, Jose Theodore, Randomness, This Irks Me, Washington Capitals | 15 CommentsYesterday I got my schedule for the year in the mail. For the most part it’s okay, but my math partner/BFF from last year isn’t in my class this year, and while I finally have a class with one of my good friends, I only have one with one of my others. And I have to wait until eighth period every day for Latin. And it’s exactly the same all year because all of the classes I’m taking are year-long. And I have a lunch once every six-day cycle. I’ve never had a lunch before in high school. I’m kind of scared. Who will I sit with?
Schedule Day meant that we had to go get my school supplies which meant that I had to get a binder for every single class except orchestra. Yo, I’m in locker bay. All of these binders are not going to fit. My teachers will just have to suck it up when I use folders.
The Sabres signed another guy. Woopie. I think they’re quite keen on beefing up for this season.
Bruce threw out the first pitch at the Nationals game the other night. Go Bruce!
Jose Theodore’s two month-old son died. I was completely shocked/completely depressed. I may give Theo a lot of crap, but I would never wish this on anyone. Caps, I think you need to come together and win the Cup for your backup goalie this year. If anyone deserves it this year, it’s him. It’s absolutely tragic.
NHL.com was having another 20% off sale for t-shirts but they’re still out of all of the smaller sizes of the Backstrom shirts. This is causing me distress.
I have no idea what movie to watch tonight. Which game is it of the Caps series? If it’s Gam Six, I’ll watch that. I love watching David Steckel be all sexy and heroic. And Bruce’s reaction was beyond priceless.
We Have A Lot Of Forwards
August 13, 2009 at 11:06 am | In Alex Ovechkin, Buffalo Sabres, Chicago Blackhawks, Chris Drury, Close Encounters, Contracts, Drew Stafford, Jose Theodore, Mike Grier, Patrick Kane, Semyon Varlamov, Thought-provoking Stuff | 3 CommentsReviewing the Sabres roster, it would appear as though we have a shitload of forwards, an unsigned Drew Stafford, and a couple Pirates who were hoping to make the jump this year. I may be a bit late to this party, but the Sabres look like they might need to be making some trades. I was hoping Nate and Timmy would be able to make the final roster this year, but in light of the current situation, I’m not sure there will be room for them.
I’m really on the fence about resigning Stafford. They probably do need him in the lineup, but they might be able to trade him for something good. On the other hand, if the Sabres are right up against the cap it’s not like they’ll be able to trade him away and get something good in return. I’m quite intrigued by the whole situation. I’m looking forward to how it all plays out.
Just a few other things:
- At this point, it’s really old news, but Alex got a tramp stamp. I’m just not going to comment on that.
- Even my one cousin, who is far too busy following the Panthers and Gamecocks to pay any attention to another sport like hockey, heard about Kaner getting arrested. This is a huge deal.
- Even if when he gets off with just a slap on the wrist, Kane’s still going to have to deal with a crappy reputation. This whole incident would be a perfect excuse for Chicago to say that with Duncan Keith and Jonathan Toews due contracts next summer too, the ‘Hawks just can’t afford him. And that’s when the Sabres will swoop in and sign him. Guys, at some point in his career, maybe even sooner than we thought, Patrick Kane will be a Buffalo Sabre.
- There’s a huge teeny tiny part of me that wants Chris Drury to come back now that Mike Grier is back. I know he’s outrageously overpaid, I know he’s underproducing in New York, I know he tried to knock my beloveds out of the playoffs, I know he didn’t like getting harassed by fans at Wegmans, but still. He fit really well on the Sabres.
- My dad saw Dan Marino yesterday morning when he was buying a paper. This is definitely better than the year we saw Jennifer Love Hewitt.
- Bruce, in an effort to be as cute and adorable as possible, says that Jose enters the camp as the #1 goalie. Oh, Bruce. Stop it, you funny old man, you. Varly has to compete for the starting job? Really? Okay, Bruce.
- Now, I realize that in theory this could be a really interesting competition for the starting job, but really? I have complete faith in Simeon Simyon. I believe in him.
- Speaking of Varly, a while back he changed the spelling of his name. I understand that he wants people to pronounce it properly, but still. Dude. I like the real spelling better. And now I have to change the spelling on my tag. (Edit: It’s Semyon, not Simyon. My bad.)
On To The Conference Finals!
May 15, 2009 at 4:35 pm | In Alex Ovechkin, Carolina Hurricanes, Detroit Red Wings, Frostee Does Predictions!, Hockey Gods, Jose Theodore, Pittsburgh Penguins, Randomness, Semyon Varlamov, Sergei Fedorov, Washington Capitals | Leave a CommentBut first, a few things from the Caps’ locker clean out.
When they were interviewing Jose Theodore the goaltending position came up. Jose was pretty much, “I may have been benched from the second game of the playoffs on, but that #1 job is mine, bitch.” What he actually said when asked about Simeon is “Well, he’s the goalie of the future.”
Dear Hockey Gods,
If you provide us with a major bitch fight between Simeon Varlamov and Jose Theodore during training camp next year, I will never say anything against you ever again.
With Love,
Frostee
Alex was wearing the same shirt he wore in Beijing last summer. It says Sochi 2014. I stared at it or a good five minutes before I realized where I had seen it before, and then I hurried to check my archives. Don’t judge me. I have a freaky memory when it comes to clothes. I could probably tell you what you were wearing last time I saw you (if I’ve ever hung out with you before). It’s weird.
And he’s leaving for Moscow tonight?!? SOB! I’m so sad that he’s not going to be on this continent. Can they make him come back and do another intermission report during the Stanley Cup Finals? That was horrific awesome. Why do I love European players so much? They only leave me for Europe in the summer, and I am left alone in this country. What does Russia have that we don’t?
Dear Alex,
I appreciate your decision to not go to Turkey since it’s “bad for you.” Heh. We wouldn’t want you getting into any trouble.
With Love,
Frostee
Dear Sergei Fedorov,
As you’ve stated your desire to play next yera, and the entire Washington Capitals organization seems to have a massive man crush on you, you’ll totally come back next year, right??
With Love,
Frostee
Okay, on to the Game Sevens last night.
Detroit won – big surprise – and so did Carolina. Wow. I was definitely rooting for the Hurricanes, but I didn’t think they’d actually come out alive. Cam Ward is now undefeated in Game Sevens in his career. Nice stat, Mr. Ward.
As much as I’d like to think Carolina could beat Pittsburgh, I just don’t know. They’re going to have to be fantastic to beat the Pens.
I really want the Detroit/Chicago series to be like one long string of Winter Classics. That game was highly enjoyable, and I’m hoping for an exciting series.
My picks for the Stanley Cup Finals are….drum roll…Detroit and Pittsburgh. Rematch of last year. I just don’t see anyone beating Detroit, and I think Pittsburgh will come out alive in their series, unless Eric Staal manages to score in four straight games.
Dear Detroit Red Wings,
If you beat Pittsburgh for the second year in a row to win the Stanley Cup, I will love you forever. This is not an exaggeration.
With Love,
Frostee
The Things I Know For Certain
May 5, 2009 at 3:53 pm | In Alex Ovechkin, David Steckel, Evgeni Malkin, Happy!!, Jose Theodore, Mikael Tellqvist, Pittsburgh Penguins, Semyon Varlamov, Sidney Crosby, That horse is dead. Drop the stick., Trendy Euro Sabres, Washington Capitals, Winning Is Totally Awesome | 9 Comments- Last night’s game was hugely entertaining. Completely nerve-wracking, but so much fun.
- Alex’s tour du chapeau was better than Sid’s because Alex’s won the game.
- Simeon Varlamov is really good at bouncing back from bad goals. I like that in a man. He’s reliable.
- Trendy Euro has abandoned us for the evil KHL. As I have a sinking feeling about Lala, I was thinking the Caps should ship Jose up here. He’s pretty, and it’s not like Lindy’s going to ever play him, so we wouldn’t have to worry!
- David Steckel may be a douchebag, but just as Brian is Stewie’s douchebag, David is mine. (I actually don’t know if he’s a douchebag, it’s just this random assumption I made. If you happen to know one way or another you could let me know…or not. I kind of like just going around thinking he’s a lovable douche.)
- Christine Simpson would be a fascinating subject for a mental study. She really, really would be. I’d probably end up in therapy, but I would love to know what goes on under that perfectly made up blonde head.
- Christine Simpson needs to realize that not every North American player she interviews is Sidney Crosby. His name is David Steckel, Christine. He plays for the team that won and he’s from Milwaukee. His name is not Sid.
- I think I’ve managed to figure out what Simeon’s appeal to me is. Aside from the badass goaltending and the charmingly boyish good looks, he’s a man of mystery. I know very little about him other than that he’s a goalie, he’s Russian, has a good sense of humor, and the first English word he learned was “awesome.” That must be what intrigues me. For all I know, he could be a Latin scholar who loves baking cookies and whiling away rainy days with a book.
- Simeon, don’t you dare be a Latin scholar who loves baking cookies and whiling away rainy days with a book. That would be SO not cool.
- I was worried that hanging my Caps banner in the front door would jinx them, but it didn’t. Woo!
- I’m kind of in favor of suspending Kunitz for trying to behead Simeon with his stick, but I doubt it will happen. The league has been quite inconsistent with suspensions during the playoffs this year.
- I just paid $22 for a “Got Ovechkin?” t-shirt. I’m so excited. I’m putting it on the moment it comes.
- I applaud Alex for cracking jokes in a language he isn’t completely comfortable with yet, but sometimes I don’t even know where they come from. ”I’m afraid to go home.” Does that mean your fans will be rioting excitedly out in front of your house? Does it mean that you fear another egg being left in your driveway?
- Reporters need to accept the fact that Alex isn’t going to talk about Simeon. Please, people. Just understand that and move on. Stop asking him. It’s a tad bit annoying.
- Also, can we please get over this whole Alex-LeBron thing? Yes, they’ve met each other. Yes, LeBron sent him a jersey. We know. You’ve only told us a million times.
- What they’ve left out every single time they tell it, however, is that Lars was also there that day. Poor boy. Everyone always forgets Lars.
- I feel a clarification is necessary, as many people (read: my brother) have been asking me over and over again why just because I love Alex, I have to hate Sid. Here’s the deal: Long before I even cared about Alex, I disliked Sidney Crosby. It’s just always been there. I can’t even fully explain it. (Well, no, I can. It just takes a while and I don’t feel like going into it.) I didn’t start disliking the Penguins until I started liking the Caps. That’s all.
- Evgeni Malkin can always be relied on to choke in the playoffs. Did he miss the flight to DC?
- Will being back in front of their home crowd give the Penguins a huge lift tomorrow night? Absolutely.
- Is a 2-0 series lead in Washington’s favor huge, and hard to overcome? Hell, yes. I’m not making any predictions and I’m not saying anything. I’m just…sayin’.
