So. Much. Fun.

It probably won’t come as a surprise to you that I don’t like the Penguins.  At all.  I hate them.  Part of it is that I don’t like how they were forced down our throats, part of it is that I’m still bitter from the Winter Classic, and part of it is that, hello! I’m also a Capitals fan.  No Pens love here.

That being said, I was none too pleased when it was 3-0 last night.  The Caps had dug themselves in a similar hole last night, my jersey was about to go 0-2, the players all looked like crap, and even worse, Ryan Miller looked like crap.  I’ve reconciled myself with the fact that our team isn’t all that special, but we have an insanely good goalie.  When even our insanely good goalie is playing badly, I get a little angry.

Then Drew Stafford got a penalty shot.

I know pretty much everyone else has already said it, but that was huge for both him and the team to go out and score on the penalty shot.  And it was even bigger for him to score another goal.  And then, after I spent the past few games yelling at Jason, it was big for him to go and score another goal.  And, of course, Goosie.  It was so ridiculously awesome to watch that game and the comeback.  These are the games that are so much fun while you’re watching them, and then weeks or months later it’s fun to bring them up.  Yes, I do remember when the Sabres came back and kick the Penguins’ collective asses in regulation!  Yes, that was an awesome game!

This might have been the highlight of the game.  Tyler, you simply are the best.

Steve Montador is kind of wonderful, guys.  I’m just throwing that out there.  Maybe Darcy totally knew what he was doing.

Patrick Lalime’s numbers since his “little trip” to Portland (Jason, you’re too cute) have been kind of stellar.  It was really cool not having to freak out about the backup letting in sixteen goals after the starter let in three soft ones.  Patrick Lalime has been very, very good.  I love it.

I sort of feel like this whole “getting pulled and then throwing a temper tantrum” is something we’ll have to tread lightly around with Ryan.  After the way he looked on the bench, I certainly would be too scared to ask him about it.  Be careful on NHL Live today, guys.  This is, after all, the guy who mentioned stabbing Scott Gomez.

This was definitely the best game of the season.  It was also my favorite game of the season.  And these two points are so important since they will be losing to the Thrashers Friday night.

On the Capitals side of things, Jason Chimera wants me to like him.  Sorry, Jason.  I like that someone is swearing his head off in the background (Michael?) and I love how stupid Alex is (did you know he collects players’ sticks?  He’s such a wackadoodle), but I simply cannot love you.  Score the Stanley Cup clinching goal and we’ll talk.  But for now, we are enemies.

And don’t you dare hug Karl Alzner like that.

Hey Look, Personality!!

During the first intermission tonight, we were treated to an interview in which Drew Stafford discusses Festivus.  I was really impressed by this video for two reasons:

1.)  Videos like this are pretty much the norm for a lot of other teams, but one gripe I’ve always had about the Sabres is that after a crappy game or when I’m in the mood for warm and fuzzy Sabre-love, there aren’t any hilarious/ridiculous/cute videos to watch.  I like that we get to see a guy’s personality for once.

2.)  The biceps.  Two tickets for the gun show, please!!

(Lindy didn’t hurt at the end either:  ”I don’t even know why you would ask me such a stupid question.”  Lindy, you’re not so bad.)

On the other side, Alex was dancing along to some techno music at the end of the game.  I sincerely hope someone gets it up on Youtube.

While the intermission was rather enjoyable, the game itself was crap for the Sabres.  They sucked in the first period, they played a great second period, and then they sucked/spent too much time in the box in the third period.  Ryan Miller looked like the Miller of old on the first two goals, and if we’re going to start seeing more of that I will scream.  The penalty killing didn’t hold up when they needed it the most.  The power play continues to suck major ass.  I can’t even articulate how bad it is.  I…..it…..nightmares….

AND they play Ottawa next, so, you know, kicks and giggles, sunshine and lollipops.  I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see Lala start after Miller gave up five goals tonight, and also since December 26 is the most popular day for backups to start.  (That’s one of my favorite statistics, by the way.)

The Caps, on the other hand, played a really great game.  They started quickly, they didn’t lose their heads when the Sabres cut it down to a one-goal lead, and the finally managed to get something going on the two-man advantage.  Their 5-3 was horrible Saturday night and their power play wasn’t much better up in Canada, so to see them get two goals with the advantage when they needed it was nice.  Unfortunate it had to happen against the Sabres, but at least it happened.

I don’t get to see these two teams play each other again until March.  Frowny face.

Neuvy was pretty good last night.  He didn’t see any action in the first period, but he was rather solid in the second.

Lars scoring makes me all warm and fuzzy.

It’s about time Tim Connolly tried to make something happen.  I really like how he’s been working hard and justifying his contract.

I enjoyed all the faceoffs Goosie and David took against each other.  I’d have to check the actual statistics, but I think Paul had the upper hand this time.

Steve Montador is only a little gross without his fake tooth in.

LOL moment of the night:  Mike Green saying he likes blocking shots.  Sure thing, Michael.  Whatever you say.

He’s so cute when he tries to pretend he actually gives a crap about defense.

Have a very safe and happy holidays, everyone, and enjoy Festivus!!  Thanks again for reading.  You’re all the bestest.

Birthday Wishes And Other Things Of Varying Importance. (Now With An Uber-Cute Update)

Happy birthday, darling Lars!!  Oh, the time passes so quickly.  You’re growing up to be a big boy.  *sniffles*

In honor of you, I wore an American Eagle sweater today.  I know how much you love them:

He’s such an adorable little porky leather head.

(An aside:  If I walked into an American Eagle and he was just standing there, perusing the racks on the guys side of the store, I would most likely either drop dead where I was standing or shriek.)

Thanks to TSN, we can now see what Alex got Lars for his birthday.  ”Right now my eyes are sore a little, but it’s okay.”

I love them.  Best part is when they show Alex and you can see Flash sticking his face in to see if the mission was successful.

In other news…

Not much is happening with the Sabres, for a change.  Lindy’s shuffling lines, Mike Grier might be back soon, Patches played at forward in practice.  Awe.  Some.

I’m inordinately excited for the game Wednesday night.  I love when my two teams play each other.  However, a word of caution for the Sabres:  Last year the day before Thanksgiving Alex got a hatter.  Just sayin’.  Watch out, boys.

I had some really funny story I was going to tell and then I COMPLETELY forgot about it.  Rats.  It must not have been that funny.

Is Drew going to be back Wednesday night?  Can we call up Tyler Ennis if he’s not?  I always liked that boy.

During the Sabres game Wednesday night, my mom and I spent a good twenty minutes discussing Timmy K’s hair.  We decided we like it.

That Was A Close One.

Both of my teams went to overtime last night, but only one of them came out alive.  In the grand scheme of things, I think it’s worse to lose to the Maple Leafs in overtime than it is to lose to the Islanders.  But I’m still mad at you, Caps.  You don’t play defense, Tom Poti still sucks, and you greatly angered me last night.

Okay, now that I got that out of my system, on to the Sabres!

They managed to win in overtime.  This is a good thing, as Little Ryan probably would have lost his head if they haven’t.  Dudes, how many times do we have to go over this?  YOU CAN’T GIVE UP GOALS TO REALLY BAD TEAMS IN THE LAST MINUTE OF THE PERIOD.  IT IS GENERALLY FROWNED UPON AND IT WON’T GET YOU ANYWHERE IN LIFE.

Drew got a goal for this birthday, so happy birthday again, little buddy!  He also informed us, via Twitter, that swine has wreaked havoc on their team Halloween party.  That’s a major bummer.  Do you think I could get some quotes for my article?

Timmy also continued to be a badass and scored two goals, including the OT winner.  I especially liked the one in overtime.  You’re a good player, Timothy.  You’re a really, really good player when you’re not hurt.

Timmy K continued to further embed himself in my heart by being awesome and gritty and too cute for words.  He’s a good one, that Timmy.  I like having him around.

Ryan Miller saved the Sabres’ collective backsides last night.  He’s be great to this point in the season and I don’t want him getting tired out.  That would be bad.

I’m fairly confident the Sabres will lose tonight for several reasons:

1.)  It’s the second night of a back-to-back.

2.)  Lala will hopefully be starting.

3.)  It’s the Islanders, and therefore we can’t count on the Sabres to win.

4.)  The Islanders will be riding on the “emotional high” of beating a team that was on a six-game winning streak in overtime.  Argh.

Happy Halloween, kids.  Enjoy the game if you stay in and watch it, enjoy the candy if you go get some.  Make sure you check every piece before you eat it!

Hurray For New TVs!!

October 30, 2009 at 3:48 pm | In Buffalo Sabres, Derek Roy, Drew Stafford, Jason Pominville, Lindy Ruff, Olympics, Paul Gaustad, Players, Randomness, Ryan Miller, Tim Connolly, Tim Connolly must be made of toothpicks and chewing gum, Tyler Myers, Washington Capitals, What Is Up With All These Injuries? | Leave a Comment

As I’m sure you inferred from the title of this post, we got a new TV.  It’s big and beautiful and I am salivating at the thought of watching hockey tonight.  Both of my teams are playing really bad teams, so I’m sure both the Caps and Sabres will lose.  It’s bound to happen at some point.

Everyone’s feeling the love for Ryan Miller (as am I), and rightly so.  The dude’s been on fire lately.  He’s going to be pretty BAMF for Team USA in February.  I’m choosing not to think about what will happen after the Olympics, when he’s too tired to even make it to the crease.  We’ll get there eventually.

(And just for the record, no one believes my theory that Lindy keeps playing Ryan to exhaust him in an attempt to sabotage Team USA.  Yes, I know Lindy doesn’t like backups and trusts Lala about as far as he can throw him, but still.  He’s the coach of Team Canada.  Ryan is the presumed starter for Team USA.  It’s always possible.)

Jason is one of the several Sabres leading the team in scoring.  I like this.  It made me really, really sad last year when he sucked.

Poor, poor Goosie has the flu.  I hope it’s not swine, Paul!  Feel better soon and beware the pig!

Timmy sat out practice with “minor bumps and bruises” (according to The Buffalo News), which means he’ll be out for the next 6-8 weeks with an undisclosed upper-lower body injury.

Derek Roy needs to get on that whole “I haven’t scored a goal yet” thing stat.  Not scoring goals is BAD, Royzie.  You must fix this immediately, or else.

Happy birthday, Drew!  I always thought it was fitting that he’s an almost-Halloween baby, since he’s kinda, well, out there….and reminds me of Halloween…uh…this sounded better in my head.  I apologize.

I have absolutely no intention of watching the game tomorrow night.  I will be trick-or-treating, because anyone who has an awesome costume and passes up on free candy is lame.

I’m afraid to wear my Caps jersey because last time I did, they were in the midst of that awful, painful losing streak.  They’ve won six straight and I don’t want to jinx that, but like I said.  I want to wear it.  Bad.

I wish my stupid Lars t-shirt wasn’t backordered.  The hockey gods seriously do not want me to own this shirt.

I’m really excited for the first game of the Tyler Myers era.  I sincerely hope that his play over the first nine games had nothing to do with him having to impress the coaches and everything to do with how he normally plays.  (Does that sentence even make any sense?)  I don’t want him to be a fluke.  I want to know that he’s actually a really talented player.

I’m writing an article for the school paper on the swine flu and I’m interviewing my dad for it.  Normally this wouldn’t be a problem, but after his brief appearance on Channel 2 Monday afternoon, he keeps telling me I have to call public relations to get an interview with him.  I plan on hiding the remote right before the Sabres game starts and blackmailing him into giving me some quotes on how the oink-oink can affect a high school environment.

Go Sabres/Caps!  Woo!

Facts.

October 24, 2009 at 10:21 pm | In Alex Ovechkin, Buffalo Sabres, Drew Stafford, Frostee Loves Way Too Many Guys, Happy!!, Ilya Kovalchuk, Mike Grier, Paul Gaustad, Tampa Bay Lightning, Tim Kennedy, Toronto Maple Leafs, Tyler Myers, Washington Capitals, Winning Is Totally Awesome | Leave a Comment

Fact: I love Tyler Myers. I would drop out of high school to marry him if he asked me. He’s amazing. He’s wonderful. He and Paul Gaustad can team up to rid the world of global warming and cure cancer.

Fact: I’m really pissed I missed the Capitals game.

Fact: Alex doesn’t score goals when I don’t watch.

Fact: That was the WORST shootout I have ever seen in my life. And I’ve seen a lot of shootouts and they’re always bad.

Fact: Timmy K and Mike Grier have the best chemistry. Its awesomeness is second only their goal celebration hugs.

Fact: Toronto will not win a hockey game this season.

Fact: Mike Richards’s hit was vicious. Good grief, Mike.

Fact: I hope Ilya’s ok.

Fact: Marty St. Louis confuses me.

Fact: I really wanted Drew to face Ryan in the shootout.

Fact: I am so insanely tired and I couldn’t even muster enough energy to care about this game until Drew tied it. I want to go to sleep so badly but sleeping in the job is the number one no-no when babysitting.

Fact: I don’t think the Sabres were all that mind-blowingly good tonight, but being able to come from behind at the very end and win is huge, even against a team like Tampa Bay.

Fact: Don Cherry’s suit was crazy tonight.

Yikes.

I get that the Sabres were in Nashville last night and that they even won, but good grief. That might be the most boring hockey game ever. (At least since the won they played against Nashville last season.)

This was the secod straight game that made me think the Sabres either wanted to kill my soul or for me to take a nap. At least I was in excellent company at the Phoenix game and therefore didn’t have to play uber close attention for the whole thing. Last night was a complete snoozefest. I don’t even know how I made it through the whole thing.

I am, however, thrilled that it wa a Timmykins-assisted Grier goal that won a shutout for Ryan Miller.

The Sabres record right now is 2-0-1 but I don’t feel as though that’s an indication of how they’ve been playing. Looking at that record would make you think that the Sabres have been really good this season, but their power play sucks and they can’t score. I don’t know. I’m worried for Tuesday night against Detroit.

Speaking of Detroit, the Capitals are never winning another hockey game. Never ever again.

The highlight of last night was during Lindy’s postgame interview when Drew was strangling Pie (I think) in the background. It probably wasn’t as funny as it seemed at the time, but I was really tired so it cracked me up.

Reggie is hurt, and if he’s out for a long period of time that pretty much guarantees that Tyler is in. I still don’t really understand how he got hurt, but whatevs. Get well soon, Reg.

I think the Sabres are going to have to learn how to score goals if they even want to stand a chance against the Red Wings.

Poor Sabres/Woo Caps!!

Oh, Sabres. I know it’s just the preseason, but it would have been nice to see you pull out a win./Awesome job, Capitals!! I know it’s just the preseason, but it’s always nice to see a win.

Don’t feel too bad, Sabres. Timmy K got a goal, Drew played pretty darn well, and if this game had actually counted for anything in the grand scheme of things, you would have at least walked away with one point!/You should be proud of yourselves, Caps. This game may not have counted for anything in the grand scheme of things, but Varly played a great game and seeing Brian Pothier get the OT winner always makes me feel warm and fuzzy. Just one question, though: Why was Jeff Schultz getting so much ice time?

Like I already mentioned, this game doesn’t count for anything in the grand scheme of things. It was still, however, a hockey game, and I had an amazing time. Hockey is hockey, Dear Readers, and hockey is back.

One of the better parts of the evening took place during the warmup. As you know, Cari was kind enough to make me a sign so that I could share with the world my love for Alexander and my hope that he would have a happy birthday. However, I didn’t want to look like the dumb chick who thought Alex would be there, so we took a Sharpie and wrote on the back that I knew ge wasn’t there, and that I loved Chris Clark too. Christopher and I do, after all, have a little inside joke, and I thought he could use some love. And I didn’t feel the need to list that he’s actually my fourth-favorite Capital. (Although after last night, I think he made the jump to #3)

When the warmup began I took my sign down to the ice and flipped it back and forth so that the team could see both sides. I suspected that he was looking my way, and sure enough, he was eyeing my sign. I waved. He looked me straight in the eye and smiled. I about died.

Then, a few minutes later, when he and Mike Knuble were standing in front of me, I distinctly heard him say, “Hey, look at that sign.” Then he pointed.

So, Dear Readers, that was the highlight of my evening. Just thought I’d share it with you.

Well, Well, Well. You Finally Came Around, Drew.

It would appear as though Stafford has re-signed with the Sabres, this time for real. $3.8 million over 2 years is fine by me. Nice job, Drew. Thanks for not being a greedy bastard in the end. (Even though I’m sure you’re counting on a big payday in two years.)

He had career highs last season, but I expect him to be better. Hear that, Drew? More than 45 points, please.

You know what this means?? Hockey is SOCLOSE. It’s ALMOST HERE!!!

Woohoo For Study Halls!!

September 10, 2009 at 7:47 am | In Alex Ovechkin, Drew Stafford, Randomness | Leave a Comment

We have a study hall today, which means I can go on my phone that looks like an iPod. Huzzah!!

I don’t actually have that much to report. I might fail my first AP test next week because of my love for the Caps. This has me a bit concerned, and only partly because I have to nail the first test so that the student teacher who looks like Luke Schenn who thinks I’m a retard who doesn’t know what order years go in B.C. realizes I’m actually smart. Alex rode a zamboni yesterday, but I was more concerned about his pants. Alex, let me at least be your fashion consultant. Please.

Staffy hasn’t officially re-signed yet. I think Papa Ovechkin only has one shirt.

In exactly one week I get to see hockey again. The season is almost here!!!
